We played our first game yesterday and I just wanted to share the results and events that took place for critique and suggestions. A little background info to paint a clear picture. I took over a team that had a undefeated regular season and lost in the third round of the playoffs. They lost on offense 4 linemen and a all state qb, rb, and wr. They ran the "I" last year. On offense we start 2 seniors, 1 jr ol , 2 junior wrs and the rest are sophmores. we have 2 returning starters on offense and 5 on defense. This year we a re a bear front defense and a spread offense. Yesterday we held them to 3.0 yards per play and 158 total yards. They threw 2 ints. We had 196 rushing and 128 passing. We had 1 rb to average 5 yards a carry and 1 to average 6. The drop back qb was 11 for 19 196 yards and 2 ints. I had a 5 star athlete who had 133 yards receiving and 75 yards rushing. The senior qb did a terrible job of running the no huddle. He milked the play clock to 2 seconds every time and I had to call time out to keep from getting delay of game penalties. We broke a middle screen to the athlete for a 80 yard td only to have it called back for a first time ol down field block in the back. In the first half we had 2 fumbles one of which they recovered on the 12 yard line that they turned into a touchdown. Overall we had 4 turnovers 2 int and 2 fumbles. In the 4th quarter I put the athlete at qb and we went West Virgina style and went straight down the field for a score to tie the game. the defense stopped them again and we went down the field at ease for a field gaol to tie the game as as expected missed it. The defense stopped them again and we got the ball and were driving and on a qb dart play the rb knocked the ball out of his hand. The defense held them to make them try a 43 yard field goal with a few second left. I called timeout to ice the kicker and as my luck would have it the 2 time all city defensive end was called for a neutral zone infraction which made the field goal 38 yards which he barely made. The final was 10 to 7. We cleary outplayed them except for mistakes. I am looking for info on how to help a young team not play young as crazy as that sounds and suggestions on whether to make the qb move or give the guy who I have been training all summer more than 3 quarters of a chance

What was the caliber of the competion you played? Outplaying a below average opponent and losing is different then outplaying a quality opponent and losing a close one- I think that determines the direction you take with your squad to some extent.
Watch film and correct and praise as you normally would- emphasize how small things in a tight game can have huge consequences and when you have a number of them you are likely in trouble.
My take is you had many players getting thier first varsity start and it seems they did a better then average job of it (but again that's based on the quality of your opponent and how things look on tape).

If your taking over a team and it is a very young team, which it sounds like with the amount of soph. you mentioned, I would say take it game by game and really stress getting better every game. Sounds like they are not doing to bad for a young team, we are in the same situation this year where we may only have 2-3 seniors on the field at any time. We are really stressing getting better every practice and really looking to improve game to game this year. We know there are gonna be bumps in the road and have been talking about it's not how you start but how you finish kind of as a goal for the season.
We are finding out real quick after two scrimmages that even though we have some great young players out there, the bottom line is they are young. At times they are just physically out matched, just keep in mind that you are throwing JV kids out there against 18 year olds some times. I hope we can do as well as you did in your first game with that young of a team. Bottom line is experience is about the only thing that will help them not play young.

Dont feel like you have to add something every week. By the third week the menu will be huge but everything will taste like fried fish.

General rule of thumb... You lose 1 game for every sophomore on the field. Young kids are young kids for a reason, all you can really do is teach and coach, teach and coach and be patient. They aren't trying to screw up. Get them as many reps as possible. See the "what I'm working with" thread - the kid who didn't know #76 wasn't the TE...sophomore. - teach, coach, repeat That means I will go winless for the next 2 years because I start 4 soph Olinemen,2 soph wrs,a 1st time senior qb, and defense is at least junior heavy. I just hope that the team stays together during this rebuilding phase and realkizes the potential we ahve how do you do that? i amy even start a new post
