don't yell out instructions to the players on the field during a game b/c they can't hear you. That is what time outs, change of possesion, etc... is for

The hall of fame coach that hired me told me:
"Your priorities should be in this order
1. Religion if your religious
2. Family
3. Teaching kids
4. Football"

The best on the field advice I have gotten was to value the smallest things most (stance, footwork, etc.)
The best off the field advice was to always come home from a clinic (or other football weekend) with some sort of chocolate or sweet for the wife.

Make sure that everything that you do on the practice field- every drill- is directly related to football.

What goes on on the road...stays on the road.
This was told to me in my first full time stint as a coach by a seasoned veteran in the profession, "Son you ain't coached till you've coached through an 0-10 season".

I HAVE to coach.. if I wasnt coaching.. I really dont know that I could handle it.. I have either been playing or coaching in the fall for the last 16 years.. |

What am I missing. This is my second year coaching and still have not gotten any advice besides on this board. I have received advice as far as the D we run or drills or "Make sure you fight for your "D" time because if you dont the HC/OC will steal it from you". The HC did tell me this" Always wash your hands BEFORE you touch your peter in a public school restroom". I guess that is good advice.

FOOTBALL
1. Adjust and Proceed
2. The bigger the game, the smaller the game plan
3. It is better to be respected by your players then liked by your players
FAMILY
1. Always make time for the family during the season!!! My son always has a smile and hug for after a bad practice or loss!!!

WOW! and that just hit me between the eyeballs. That quote is exactly the problem with a lot of the coaches I interact with on the net and at the field house. Jgrodon, dont take this the wrong way, but that might be the best advice anybody has given you and it went right by you.

Don't define yourself as a coach first. Define yourself as a husband, father, brother, mentor and teacher then a coach.
Don't let your friends or family refer to you as coach.

Make sure the next school you coach at is an orphanage....that will take care of all the problems you have with the players and their parents.

I think if you met me, we would be having a couple of beers and talkin politics and football. Don't take this the wrong way I don't have any hate in my heart for anyone (even liberals). I coach because it is my love, my passion. If my wife or kids became seriously sick tomorrow, I would quit coaching forever., savor the good memories and forget the bad. Coaching does NOT and NEVER will define who I am as a person and a human being |

1. In crunch time, think players, not plays.
2. Players play and coaches coach,not the other way around. (Really important when I was a young coach)
3. I don't have to fool the 20 year veteran coach, I just have to fool a 17 year old kid.
