I coached a bunch before my 9-year old was old enough to play ... mostly because I wanted to feel like I had done my time.
But this is his first football season, and his team only had three coaches, so I said that I'd help out.
I'm pretty sure we're well on our way down coaching nightmare lane ....
1) All we do at practice is scrimmage. And we don't even have 11 on 11, and they don't break it down so it's even (i.e. defensive front eight vs. a line and a back or two to show motion, etc.). No - we scrimmage 11 offensive guys on 7 defenders ... and then praise a big play .... or 11 defensive guys against 7 on offense (four or five on the line).
2) We're not preparing our backups. Today we scrimmaged for two hours - of course - with our defense (going against, as usual, seven offensive guys). Not ONCE did we change out linebackers. Same three guys, the entire game. When I started rotating defensive lineman (bringing guys over from the offensive side to learn the defense), I was treated like I was causing mass confusion.
3) Our scheme is beyond f'd up, especially on defense. I knew I was in trouble when the first day of practice the coach says "we've got 16 different stunts!". We line up 53, but tonight I watched our DC/HC take the defensive end and got him to play head up on the strongside tackle. With a tight end outside of him. I tried to point out that the end is going to turn our corner every single time .... Furthermore, we run "plays" on defense (you go here, you go here, you go there). We don't consider strong-side/weak-side, we don't slant the line. We run a bunch of plays, instead of setting up the defense to make plays.
4) We jump around pre-snap. On about half the defensive plays, when the quarterback says "down" we move defensive linemen. Great. So what are we going to do when the other team goes on first sound?
5) They're having trouble getting the ball snapped and the center not getting run over. Not that we've drilled it. When I offered today to work with a center today, that was squashed - had to get down to the day's scrimmage.
6) We get pads Saturday. Tackling drills? Form tackling? Breaking it down? Nawwwww ..... though once we did work on wrapping up a bag. For about 10 minutes.
It's killing me. The first day of practice, the coach talked about his experience playing college football before the old "big injury". Yeah. Right.
You played college football, and managed to never once learn how to run a defense or organize a practice?
What's worse - I think we're going to win games. I think we've got supreme talent.
But DAMN IT .... I hate bad parks and rec coaches.
