well its time to kick off the season we start training camp monday one thing that came up in the coaches meeting was how many players should you have on a team last year i had 15 players we did pretty good 4-3-3 my three losses was by 6 points i'm thinking if i had more fresh players at my disposal we would have got over the hump with them tie games and the lost especialy since one of the lost came in the last minute with the opposing team marching 60 yards down the field with all running plays with 2min 29 sec left in the game so my question is whats a good amount of players to have on a football team

That's a hard question to answer.
I would personally like to have about 40 on my team so I could platoon. However, that is over our roster size limit (youth ball). We have 24 on our roster right now which I think is a good amount to have. Some kids will play on O, some on D, and 5 or six will play both ways. This allows everyone to have ample playing time and not just get the 'minimum' in. Those types of players I like to stick on one side of the ball and teach them how to do one position really well so that they can contribute.
If I was coaching high school ball I would want as many kids as possible.

25 is an ideal number allowing playing time for all kids and giving breaks to the few that play both ways.

24 allows us to coach everyone and get everyone a reasonable amount of playing time. At this age we want everyone to have both an offensive and defensive position and be competent at both. It also allows you to play a few of your better players both ways while getting them some breathers etc.
Ive coached with 36 and as few as 17, 24 is a nice number. 36 is a huge hassle and 17 wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Ideally, I'd like to have 20>25 players. I have yet to achieve that number. My first season in this league, we had 11. Last season we had 16 for awhile. But, that dropped to 15.

Wow only 11? Our league doesn't allow you to certify as a team with less than 18 and you forfeit if you don't suit up 16 at each game.

Yep. This is a small league. This is only my 3rd year. The league was dying. It had 4 organizations in it with two age groups: 8>9, 10>11. The organization I joined didn't even have an 8>9yr old team. I had to create it. They were happy to have any kids that I could recruit. I wish that I were as good at it as some of you other coaches. Another organization didn't have a 10>11 yr. old team. As of this year, due to the hard work of some dedicated coaches, the league is adding two more organizations. And, now there are three age groups: 7>8, 9>10, 11>12, with the possibility of adding 5>6yr old flag teams if we can get enough kids for it. Things are improving. But, it takes a lot of work.

You need 17 or 18 good kids who can block and tackle...and one kid who is a stud to have a winning record.
It's not quantity, it's quality. I've had teams of 35 thatw ould have gotten smoked by this one team I had of 18 kids.
