What is on your "can't coach without" list? I know I've seen coaches get too dependent on sleds and other fancy crap, but is there anything out there that you've found that is worth the money, so to speak? Something you use or have used that works very well for you? Just for infomations sake, why is the item so good for you?

Before someone else says it: Footballs. Otherwise give me some "bricks" for the WR for some preseason stuff and a good whistle for conditioning and were good.

Thanks for the help guys. I can definitely appreciate the smartassness. Beside footballs, helmets, pads, a whistle, a field, etc., does anyone have anything they'd recommend? A specific sled? Pads? Something you've made? Chutes? Anything you use?

I like having chutes. Ours are metal but plastic wouldn't bother me. I could probably live without them but that would be the one piece of equipment that I'd want.

I like the agile pads. Also 32 gallon rubber trashcans. Use them for several different drills such as key drills. Also can set them up as an offensive line for formation recognition and pursuit drill.

Gotta have cones and a snake/firehose for the line (Off skill guys) AND a practice field that is regulation with full markings. Hard to simulate alignments and such without them.

Pants usually help. Or at least shorts.

55 Gallon plastic drums with the rounded bottom edges. Terrific tool for teaching lineman how to move and stay low and useful for representing fronts when working with the O-line.

Gotta echo the coaches that said "cones." Don't know about the kids but I'm lost without them!

while i like having a few cones and/or some of those orange spots (p.e. dots)... all i really ask is that we have our field properly painted with lines, hash marks, and numbers. as long as we got the dimensions/markings (and properly aired balls) then we can make a go of it.

ICE Machine, Freezer and Beer cooler
why are these important, cuase these things are nessary on how to teach kids to catch the football when it gets cold in wisconsin. put the balls in the freezer, then put the beer cooler full of ice, put the balls in plastic bags and fill the beer cooler with ice. take to the practice field adn games for prepractice.

Besides the obvious whistle, footballs, ect., my favorite piece of equipment is the 2 man carouther sled.

Ugh, I left 8 of mine at the previous school I was at. Great for oline, great to fit reps on, great to use stacked on each other as zone defenders to throw curls, hunts, etc....good visual tool to teach receivers to sit in the hole vs zones.....

The one thing that quickly amde into our "must haves" (after the obvious stuff of course) is our Whaley timer. It is a short duration segment timer that can act as a stop watch or countdown timer and the O-line coach and I constantly fight over it for drills ( he usually wins since he is a former PAC 10 OL and pro wrestler - sorry choke slams hurt a bit guys) and it has done wonders in the month we have had it. best $400 investment we have ever done. whaleycoachingsystems.com/

We are in Florida, our own ice-machine and big fans. No not 300 pound cheerleaders, those big barrel fans. Has saved our butts several times in the heat of August practice when temps hit +90.
Trash cans-I don't know how I coached without them before. Have used them for 3 years now. They are perfect for offense and defense.

i would honestly have to say my laptop.
i have a sled and it is nice...but i wouldnt know half of what i know without my laptop. This site along with others have helped me develop very quickly as a coach.
I can also use to make playbooks, practice plans, scouting reports etc... whatever

A coach I know uses buffer pads that the custodians use instead of trash cans. They are easier to carry, free and serve the same purpose.

I honestly think I could get by with a big stack of disk cones and a whistle. I don't want to test my theory though.

No one has mention video. Love to film practice when its possible. Now it wouldn't be my top pick but very helpful.
