Serious question: Any coaching staff's do a pre-season retreat or get away? If so, what are some things you have done? Was there content, etc?
(Other than those of you whose staff trip might entail going to the strip club and drinking beer of course)

I have been on staffs were we just go to a cabin for a three night weekend. We hash out football material the first night and all day the next day. We then had a horseshoe tourney and fishing and other stuff. The last day was a Sunday and we had all the families come up for a BBQ and relaxation. I really liked the format we had. It was a fun staff and we really got a long with each other.
The cabin was about an hour and a half away from home so it was not to far away. We had all Varsity, JV, and Freshman coaches attend because we all wanted to be on the same page when talking about athletes and their role on the team.

Our coaches outing every summer consists of a 4 hr. car ride, 3-4 hours of tailgating, a baseball game, dinner and a few drinks and a nice little hang over the next morning driving back. It's some of the best times and have made some priceless memories for our coaching staff!

We don't do anything as a total staff in the summer. During school on the end of the 3rd quarter day, our staff go on a trip to a college to go watch some spring ball and talk with coaches. Our staff has gone to Iowa, Iowa St., Northwestern, Augastana SD. If we take 2 vehicles the o is in one and the D in other. But either way we discuss personel, practice set up, O and D goals, at risk players and schemes for the next season. We then have the summer to install and tweak what we discuss. The colleges have been great to talk to and we get a lot done as a staff. We get a lot of work done and we consider it staff development even though it doesn't come out of that budget and we pay for it all.

We have our Coaching School that we attend and those who attend together (travel, attend clinics, and socialize later) seem to develop a better relationship with the rest of the staff.
The first coach who hired me said this meant the world to him and a staff. Things like this helped to develop a bond and trust among each other. The more that we trusted each other, even if we didn't agree all the time, the better we would work together. He also said that he couldn't trust a coach if he wouldn't sit down and have at least one beer with him.
We also do a pre-season party with all the coaches and their families that is a pretty big deal. This helps us to get to know everyone's families too. Its part of the deal as well. In the past we also have had post-game parties with staff and families after home games so it helps too.
