this is a reply I made on a thread on a texas hs football board, I thought it would be an interesting thing to look at here
First of all, I agree with Burnet44. Find those weak sisters and abuse them. The higher up in classifcation the more narrow the disparity between weak sisters will be.
After just looking at pure numbers of guys balanced formation vs balanced or unbalanced defense, I look mainly at the secondary to instantly tell me some structure.
Anyhow, during a game, I mostly look at 1hi or 2 hi and see who is going to play the force. With our offense I don't really care too too much about what front they are in. Is that a 3 working to a 1? or a 2 working to a 3? I naturally gravitate towards looking at that stuff anyhow as an old OL guy. The stuff we do on offense doesn't really matter what they are in with that too too much. Now, common sense tells me/us that if there is a total cat-daddy studmuffin at the 3 tech or whatever that I will also see what he is doing and figure out how to negate him as much as possible (screens/traps etc) but the biggest deal to me is the force/flat players. How are they trying to switch that up? How does that affect the pass plays I can/want to call to force them back into what I want to do so I can get back to running the ball?
After the basic scheme stuff, I look at DE play more than anything thing. Can we reach him? Can we load/veer release him/power him/wham him?
From the box, I am able to see all of this. It has taken a few years for me to be able to see all of it, and I am sure there are times when I too zone in on stuff. That is why I make sure that we have different people assigned to looking at different stuff. The other guy in the box is looking at the far side force/de play--seeing how they are switching things etc. Other guy (defensive freshman coach) is looking at the farside corner alignment to see if there is something we can take advantage of.
OL coach on sideline is deep down on one end seeing how the front is being affected by our blocking scheme
WR coach is on sideline--signal plays-we are no huddle-watching inside slots/wr play vs secondary run/pass on short side of field
hc/qb/general football genius--see's the whole field and makes suggestions/adjustments--when my hc makes suggestions--I listen---he knows his stuff and if he sees things we can attack I will call something accordingly.---it is a cool situation--he is a defensive guy- so he doesn't get too playcallerlike-but he sees stuff or "feels" stuff that I might or might not see and I certainly listen.
The big thing is as an oc-to have a staff that you can trust and believe in to give you good info. We worked it all out on saturday and sunday what our adjustments to different looks will be-when we are all on the same page--when the ol coach says "hey, we can do such and such because of this" I listen. If I had seen it or not. I might not get to it the next play, but what they said is in my head for sure and I will get to it.
now, if you don't have a staff like that-it is a little harder
if you have more staff that you trust it becomes an issue of sorting through the data/info/talking that comes through the headsets---sometimes you have to have them all shut off and just ask who you need to
