We are running a football camp...but for guys aged 6=9.....Anyone have any drills laid out for this age group. Don't want to try to teach them things that are too complicated that have step after step like we teach our linemen and QB's ..any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Hi Coach, I've been helping with a camp for about three years with allot of kids this age.
The guy who's camp it is, Ryan Dutton, sticks to a bunch of combinelike drill..(I think I invented a new word there.)
We take allot of time working on dynamic stretching, we do split into groups according to position. We work on footwork use allot of cone drills. We also use allot of different drills with bags. The kids seem to like this because they see the HS kids using them.
Attention spans are always an issue so we have found shorter time periods works better.
The last thing we do is a modified combine ending in an obstacle coarse.
It always surprises me how much the young ones can handle. (These little ones don't know they have to drink water we have to force them to drink every year.)

Some tips: Divide the kids into sub groups based on age atheticism, each group/team has a designated name they make up and a captain you designate. Helps keep the groups together after breaks etc. Stations to start with these kids are SO young, no more than 5 minutes of dynamic warm ups needed ( slow high knees from a stance using cadence, butt kickers fro stance using cadence) From 2 lines facing each other. Demo each movement yourself then demo it with a kid that knows what he is doing. Stations: Angle Form and Fit tackling Splatter tackling (into bed of dummies tackling player holding shield) Above the waist stationary catches from 7 yards, fit ball run it back, Below the waist, fit run back Sumo Drill/game Towel Drill/game ( tug of war with one player on each end of towel, one in middle, 3 pylons 5 yards away from each, must drag the group to your pylon so you can touch it) Dummy fit blocking Drill Ball carrying progression ( for us being direct snap team, snap to a ball fit, then snap to a ball fit and he runs to the off tackle hole (cones) and 10 yards, snap to fit and to off tackle with 2 tall dummies he has to squeeze through, snap to fit off tackle gauntlett We would end with a Deer Hunter game Day 2 we would move to more position specific drills and re-align the groups to get kids into postion groups based on what we saw the day before. Very easy to put the kids into positions if you run the towel drill or sumo station and watch the deer hunter games real close. Next day we break into those groups and add more detail to each position. Example for the linemen we will work on our first 2 steps for the o-line, we will teach pulling, base block, double teams, we will teach both a swim and a rip move on defense. We will vary the evaluation/team building games every day we would include tall dummy relay races, Hawaiian rules football, rabbit chases etc For that age making it fun significantly increases attentiveness, enthusiasm and retention. All stations or drills we do are about 10 minutes. We make games, relays, contests out of nearly everything we do. Great way to build some enthusiasm, get the kids to understand how you want them to work with you (listening and disclipline) and who goes into what positions on the first day of practice. There are some posts here that you can search on for some of that- clinics, camps, specific drills:
