It is truly amazing how many coaches believe that the spread will not work at the youth football level. I have ran it for years with great success. I am not saying that the DBL wing, wing t, I form are bad choices I just prefer have less O and D players at the point of attack.

Welcome aboard, coach - glad to have you here. There are plenty of spread-friendly coaches here, but there are many more (and often more vocal) spread naysayers. It makes for entertaining discussions. My opinion is probably pretty close to yours - the main thing I like about spread is that it allows me to move defenders (often the most athletic defenders) away from the POA and to get my best athletes the ball in space.

I just prefer have less O and D players at the point of attack. As an OC, I prefer to have more offensive than defensive players at the POA, whatever the system used. Defensively, of course, I prefer the reverse -- again, whatever system is in use...

The spread totally blows for youth football. You are a liar if you think it works well and you are a liar if you say you have been successful with the spread at the youth level for any length of time. bs

I don't know that anyone here could argue with reasoning like that. You must be very proud.

whoa big fella....lol......try to rein in the personal attacks.....its a big world out there.....there's several youth coach's on the board here that run it successfully and have game film to back it up......(I'm not one of them by the way, lol) but "be careful" of making blanket statements, about what works and what doesn't......in youth ball

Welcome aboard coach. I am coaching an 8-10 yr old Mighty Might team this year and we will be a spread option, no huddle team exclusively. I love it when naysayers tell me.... "you can't run spread with kids that age". Talk about motivating the kids and myself even more! lol

I coach in Saint Cloud Florida. Ive been running the spread for 5 seasons. In those five seasons the age groups have varied from 8-14 year olds. Our entire program all age and weight groups run the spread. We run exactly what our local High School runs. We are a feeder program.

Guru, I'm new also. I haven't been yelled at like you, though. I was told 3 yrs. ago that the kids couldn't run the triple option. We run it program wide starting with the 8 year olds. It always comes down to what my HS coach use to say. "Blocking and Tackling" Welcome.

We are running the Spread this year. We had some trouble at times w/ the Dbl wing we ran last year because of the backfield motion & the amount of time it took to get the ball out of the back filed. Also You need to have more of a big power type of runner in the DW. We've been doing the spread this year & we are hitting the hole much faster. People always think of the spread as a passing formation, but in fact its an excellent running formation. The keys to it seem to be getting a good block on the play side DE or EMLOS & getting the snap right so the play gets going quickly. Mis-direction plays are working much better now than they did for us with the DW. I was told I was nuts for trying it at the 9-10 yr old level. But I welcomed the challenge. If you always do what you always did, then you'll only get what you've always got.

Well I hope you get a lot of info here coach and welcome to the board. I will not disagree with what a coach can teach to the kids. Never sell your team short on what they can learn and do well with good coaching.
