Any advice for a new HC on practice schedules and times. In my state we are allowed 3 conditioning days with out pads just helmets before we begin our "Double Sessions" What are the best times to get these practice times in. My whole staff is in my HS with the exception of two coaches who are at the middle school. We are a Pistol option team as well as an aggressive 4-3 defense. My concern like everyone else, is that there is not enough time in the day. What are the best times to go?

No pat answers on this one other than what is "Best" for the players and the coaches.
We are in South Florida so we try to work our conditioning and 2 a days around the temperature and humidity extremes of the day. For 2 days we generally go with one LONG session from 3:00 to 7:00 PM for 2 weeks. Some of this is on the field, some is in the classroom or weight room. This schedule also helps us as some of our young players don't drive and they only have to get dropped off and picked once instead of multiple times if we did an AM and separate PM practice. This schedule also allows our coaches who are teachers to be involved with the regular teacher in service meetings at the start of the school year - my principals love this! As far as having enough time, it is what it is. We strive to teach efficiently in the time that we have. Don't think about trying to teach more, think about trying to teach better. That's my 2 cents.

I like to have a 2 hour practice, an hour break where the kids can eat and drink and relax in our field house and then another 2 hour practice. With my kids, it is hard to be able to count on them to return if the first practice is tough.

We treat it like a normal practice without pads. We split our 2-a-days. We go from 7-9:30 AM then come back from 4-6:30.

We go 3:00pm-5:00pm on the field, 45 minute break for food and water and 45 minute chalk talk or team meeting in air conditioned room, then back on the field from 6:30pm-8:30pm. We have found one of the added benefits is they have time to get a good breakfast and decent lunch before they come to practice. They also don't have time to get too stiff and sore like they used to do when we went early morning and late afternoon. It is a long day for the coaches when we have those teacher meetings, but that does make administration happy, which can pay off later. We've done it this way for many years and like it a lot.

We went from 3:30-5:30 and then broke to meet and eat until 6:30 and then we practiced from 6:45 to 8:30. I liked it but what we are going to do is meet with the kids first and then just break to eat inbetween practice so that we don't have moves from the locker room to the cafeteria to the meeting room back down to the locker room. Once the meetings are over they will only be in the locker room and the cafeteria between practices. We will see how it goes this year.

this is what we wanna try this year....we've traditionally done it from 3-7:30 but that was almost to much of a wear on the kids because it was such a long period without the kids eating . so this year during our camps we'll be going from 9-4 this is kinda the format:
9-11:30 - Def. Pract.
11:40-12:15 - Conditioning, ( No pads) because like you all I doubt that if we don't do it between practices I'd have tons of kids not return so we make a special segment dedicated just for it.
12:50 - 1:50 - Break / Lunch we have the kids bring $5 a day and we'll have either the managers and two coaches got to Costco's or Ponderosa and pickup food, that way we don't have to worry about the kids not eating and having energy.
2 - 4 Off. segment of practice
Now I know we have some kids that only play on one side of the ball, but that isn't a problem because we just treat practice the same as if it were a Def segment if you are only a 1 way guy then your Indy Coach is still running drills. it sounds confusing but here is our Practice format:
Def.........................................OFF.
10 min...... Dynamic stretch /........Settle & Noose
20 min.......Pursuit Drill /...............Pat & Go
25 min.......Tackling Drills / ............Footwork (mesh)
20 min.............INDY /.............. Groups work ( Wr, QB, RB)
25 min......(1 on 1's DB vs Wr),Inside Run ( Half Line) / Service Def.
55 Min.............................Team Def. / Scout OFF.
Offensive segment is very similar but just offensive drill oriented and defensively they do lots of walk thru reps at the time of Group work for the Def.

One of the first things I did as a HC was to make sure I would have assistants who were in my building or, at the very least, be teachers. Makes things much easier. We have two weeks of conditioning sessions prior to the start of camp. We have 3 sessions per week run from 6-8 PM and run these like a normal practice with an emphasis on either off or def and we introduce the basics of our special teams. This way, our kids, especially younger ones, get used to how practices are run, what the names of different drills are, etc. Our camp starts after the second week of conditioning. Typically, our 1st session runs from 9:00 to 11:30. We then have a lunch served at 12:00. We are fortunate enough to have a strong (and well funded) booster club that provides all of our meals. Several parents volunteer to serve it. It helps give our program a family atmosphere also. After lunch breaks up around 12:30, we will meet with our position groups from about 12:45 to 1:15. Our second session runs from 2:00 to 4:00. Mon, Wed, and Fri of that week we lift post practice. Those days we are done by 5:00. Tues and Thurs we are done at 4:00. Most years, on Thurs we cut down the second practice and Fri the second practice is just the lift as we get ready for a Saturday scrimmage. One night of the first week, usually Wed, we have an evening practice from 7:00 to 8:30. We do it in our stadium and invite the public. It has turned out to be a nice event. The second week is pretty much the same, again with one night scheduled so we get used to playing under lights. When we have evening practice, we usually cut the afternoon practice a little short and our kids go home. Being in a small town, we can get away with that. I think the biggest thing for us is that our kids are together for two weeks not just on the field, but they eat together, meet together, and it makes a difference in the chemistry of our program.
