We are alowed to practice in May for spring (no Pads). This is our first year our program/city will have enough kids to split into our respective teams (we hope) most cities already do this. Does anyone else do this? and if so what do you work on?
I was thinking it would be a good time to introduce formations and work technique. Also a good time to install the passing game and coverage...maybe 7 on 7? I think we will have 8-12 practices.

What age group?
What % of the players have playing experience?
What offense/defense will you be putting in and what are your strengths and weaknesses.

12-13yrs 125lb many kids coming back but many new kids too so I would say 70 to 80%
May take the 13-14yr 135lb team with us too (these are some of my kids from last year) as the coach who was suppost to come in and coachthe team, the league will not let him leave the city he was coaching for before (If their is any one in Fort lauderdale that would like to coach please PM me, will have to pass aBackground check)

We do spring practice. In fact we start working with kids conditioning and such as soon as our basketball season is over. Work on technique. Work your butt of on technique. This is the time to try kids at different positions or if there is anythign new your thinkign about runnign this is the time to mess with it. Not preseason. Formations and stuff like that are not bad since you can rep it a good deal and spend more of your time on the meat of your offense during the season. Rep technique though I can not stress that enough

Coach, I have coached that age group but never with the spread. Your priorities probably are different. Our Youth Program goals for the Spring are much different than most. We only get together 7-8 times, 1 day a week, If we go more than that next to impossible with baseball going on ( our select baseball players never participate) Since we have all 3 age groups doing this, we have a higher % of rookie players. Our goal: To have fun, To build an enthusiasm for playing and playing for us, develop and understanding of what we expect and how to work with us, develop positive relationships with their teammates, learn basic skills. Speed and speed form/technique, and core development are part of the proccess. We get some gains there and if the kids want to do more of this on their own, we have a trainng session with the parents and of course give them a program outline that they can use if they choose to do so. We do not encourage them to do anything over the summer but stay outdoors and have fun. . With the older kids we do some experimentation with new plays only, working on spacing, timing, etc to see if it something we want to spend more time on in the fall. We are working 2 new packages this spring, "burst Series" which is a running series and a passing series out of our "Spread Rocket" Single Wing formation.
1/3 of the time is "Football Speed" training that includes form and speed development drills including some plyos combined with football movements 1/3 is base technique development 1/3 is pure fun stuff- We call it Game Time and can include stuff like Dodge Ball, Deer Hunter, Hawiian Rules Football, obstacle course, anything thats fun and keeps the kids moving. Different goals, different uses of time

We don't practice in the spring. Too many conflicts with baseball. Almost all of our kids play baseball in the summer.

KIngswood has a well run Baseball program. I have never been associated with the program, but i hear good things. I think our kids play for lots of different organizations, but some do play in Kingswood.

Case How are you? Hope everything is going good for you this year. We did the split thing last year and at the older ages, it didn't work very well. At the younger ages there were more kids than the coaches could handle at times. This year we are going to try to run a conditioning and speed camp and split everybody up by ages. We will probably do the peewees up through the 11 and unders and then the 12 and unders through the unlimiteds. We are going 3 days a week and will have to work around baseball and lacrosse. I'm glad to hear that your numbers are up. Hopefully you guys are starting to turn the corner.
I'm not sure who you were trying to get to coach the 140lb team, but to my knowledge the league hasn't stopped any coaches from leaving a team. Anyway, good luck Case and I will see you during the season.

Rick, I am doing good. Hope you are too. We will do some speed stuff but really would like to split into our teams a little, at least the upper ages. I think we will be much more competitive this year and are turning the corner. I look forward to seeing you and stopping the DW. Also I sending you a PM.
