Currently our school ends its day at 2:20. I am at the HS by 2:30 and pre practice begins at 2:45. Our district is now looking at a new schedule of time and that would put practice back roughly a whole hour and we'd finish around 6-6:30. Having been spoiled by the early time I was wondering if that is about right for times. What times do you usually finish up when you are in season?

well we usually finish about 5:30 but of course we get out at 2:15 and we don't start until 2:45 - 5:30 I was looking into practicing later but......that's when you get into some headaches by parents etc. because they don't seem to want to have to come get there kids once they miss the after school activities buses. so......we just try to cram everything in during that time frame. I usually keep those varsity type guys longer to go over film til maybe 6:15 but that's the latest.

How on earth does a school day get done at 2:15? Around here 3 or later is standard.
We start at 4 finish by 6:15, sometimes 6:30.

get out at 3 15. Start at 3 45. and we have to finish by 5 55 because thats when the bus comes to take all the kids who live in the next city over, which is over half our team. Bus comes out 6 and leaves at 6 05 so we have to get them out of prac in time to get there, when we go over the coaches have to drive a lot of kids home

The number of "instructional minutes" is dictated by your state department of ed.
In Arkansas, you have to have 360 minutes of instruction per day...lunch doesn't count, changing class time doesn't count...actual class time.
Our day starts at 8:00 and ends at 3:15. However, Sr. athletics is last period so the kids get to the field house at 2:25.
Every few years you'll hear that there is a push require that all athletics be after school but we're holding on as of right now.

I would also like to know what states/schools get out at 2:00 or so. I would love to work some place like that. Done by 5:30 start by 3:30 We're done at 2:05. Of course, teachers have to be at school by 7:05 and class starts at 7:20. This works out well for me because I teach and coach in different school districts. The school where I coach gets out at 2:20. We have specialists out at 3 and we start practice at 3:15. Normally we end at about 6:15.

We are lucky, that we get to have football conditioning class start at 1:50, and we usually get 99% of all three levels in the class. We usually practice 2:15-5:00. We only get this schedule 3 years ago and I will never go back. Only draw back is that the earlier practice is the harder it is for off-campus coaches to help out.

A lot of people are posting that their practice only runs about 2 hours to 2.5 hours and I was wondering, do your players have to play both ways or just one way? Thanks.

Very similar to Superpower's & beardc's schedule...

Every player plays both ways for us. Most O starters start on D. We do both O and D team each day, but alternate position groups Tues- D Wed. O Th.- Specials
(off subject, but) Monday we practice at 5:30 AM... really it is film/conditioning/walk through day. (done by 7:15). We have afternoon JH/JV games on Monday (takes almost all scout team players), so this is the best schedule for us.

We get out of school at 3:15 - Players are on the field for pre-practice at 3:30 and then practice goes from 3:45 to 6:00. 6:00 -6:15 is post-practice. After game 5 or 6 we usually will be off the field by 5:45.
Post Practice is for any coaches to call over specific players that need work or for any players that want extra reps or time with the coaches.

School out 2:05, practice starts 2:30, off by 5:00, maybe 5:15 if I'm not happy with my offense. So a 2.5 hour practice and our players go both ways.

Our HS gets out at 3:15. One of our assistants is at an elementary that doesn't get out until 3:30 so we have a meeting every day with the players until 3:30 to 3:45, then start practice at 4:00. We are usually finished between 6:00 and 6:30. Works well since we can go over what we are going to do in practice in the meeting.
