The worst thing you can tell them..."Uhh, just run to that tree and back." Keep your practices organized and fun and you'll do great. Blocking drills are a big thing. Teach all of them how to 1-on-1 block, only one guy can carry the ball each play. Keys: fire off low and hard with your head up (see what you hit), keep your feet moving. Definitely tackling drills. Pair similar sized guys. Almost same keys as blocking. Come in low, keep your head up, drive your feet through the tackle, bring your arms and wrap up. Tackling DrillsWe use a diamond drill (click on the diagram below). 4 cones, diamond setup. Coach points in a direction, then on the whistle the ball carrier runs INSIDE of the cone and the tacker follows the keys above. We also like this drill. I don't have a name for it, but it works. I think some call it the "eye opener." Make the tackler attack and meet them in the hole, don't let them wait for the runner. We have the tackler shuffle slide and the ball carrier goes 3/4 speed until he turns up field. The rectangles are dummies. We put about 4-5 feet between dummies, just enough room to run through.

That drill is often referred to as the "Three Slot Challenge" we use it to in count out formatt. You lose you sit/get a drik, at the end we know who our best 3-4 tacklers are.
This drill is only used well after the kids are proficient with form tackle, angle form tackle, splatter drill tackle and close quarters tackling.

DC http://_ Are you talking about the second drill DC? I like that name for it, we used it on day one, but all of our tackling drills are walk-through until they have the form perfected. By the time we fire it up for real they're pretty solid in the tackling department. Great idea about the challenge also, we may have to implement that. We did something similar a few years ago with a 1-on-1 blocking "challenge." -------------------------------------------------- And no problem jaaj, us coaches have to spread the knowledge.

Yes, we never hit live until 3rd day in pads also. We do fit form tackling every practice.
