I think there is a real difference between "misdirection" plays like reverse, reverse pass, halfback option pass, flea flicker, etc., and gadget plays like "wrong ball" or "too many people." I use a lot of misdirection plays in my offense. They force the defense to maintain their initial responsibilities longer and help open up the rest of the playbook; in addition to all of the other reasons coachdoug offered. The gadget plays are at best unethical and, as has been pointed out, often illegal. Frankly, any coach that thinks he may be the next Vince Lombardi because he can fool a bunch to 9 year olds is sadly mistaken.

we keep him 15 yd from the ball at all times, we advise the ref of this prior to the game.
As for the fumble play we were told it is legal as long as there is no outside assistance (ie sideline) or a prop. It's no different that a fumblerooskie type play, calling out fumble is not attempting to tempt the defense into any action that could result in a penalty, like calling out the cadence...We also do this on our fake reverse play where the players all yell reverse....still havent been penalized for that either
