Hi Coaches, I will make the transition this fall from Assistant to Headcoach, and I want to give a good speech to my guys in my first players meeting in November. We had a 0-10 loss season this year and I think alot of players are down mentally. We have around 30 players on the roster (more is uncmmen in germany) and I'm thinking for quite a while what I'm going to say, I was thinking about some charts like the following: - What goals do WE want to achieve?? - What do we have to do to achieve the goals?? - What are you willing to sacrifice personally for the achievments?? Anyone have any comments on this?? Would make me feel better to be prepared, because I have some guys in the staff who are no satisfied with me as the new headcoach - Of course I want to prove them wrong

First, if the guys on your staff don't respect / appreciate / want you as the head coach, fire them. Nothing will undermine what your trying to do faster than assistants who are not on board. You could create goals for each position group, each phase of the game, etc. Depends how crazy you want to get.

I can't fire them because they are already unpaid and they are volunteers. I will tell them if they do not want to be on board with me then they can transfer if they want, but do not waste my time.
Yes, we will have a monthly award for the beste position player and by the end of the year we will have a MVP for the units. But the problem is we have some guys who just don't care and I cannot afford to loose any players because we have a thin squad.
Thanks for the first idea, any more??

- What goals do WE want to achieve?? - What do we have to do to achieve the goals?? - What are you willing to sacrifice personally for the achievments? I think you have a good start there. As much as I detest the No Fundamentals League™, I think their slogan this season is a good one from the perspective of your team: "Who wants it more?" The emphasis on personal sacrifice is the right one, I think. I mean, your players have to pay to play out of their own pockets, and it sucks to practice in the cold and wet only to lose every game...so who will make a commitment to give every effort to work harder and play better football? Best of luck with your pre-season, coach.

Coach, I would use something simple that will allow you to remind the players of the team goals by yelling out one key word or phrase during the year. I have the 3 D's.
Dedication, Desire and Discipline.
Dedication is defined as the ability to set aside for a purpose. What does this mean? This means that football becomes a priority in your life. I feel it should be second only to family, faith and edication. Other areas of interest should be second to football during the season.
Desire is defined as wishing or longing for. If you desire something, you are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. A person with desire is willingto sacrafice other areas of interest for the aim. For a person with desire; just being on the team is not enough. The desire to contribut because of your love for the game drives and pushes you to do better. It is never enough because perfection is your goal.
Discipline is defined as the result of hard training; self-orderliness and punishment. That means you push yourself to the limit. HARD WORK BEATS TALENT WHEN TALENT DOES NOT WORK HARD! You do whatever is asked without quesion. Talent is important, but discipline makes the difference between just another team and CHAMPIONS.
Our Goal is to achieve the 4th D - Domination on the field but you must achieve the first 3 D's or this will not be possible.
Good Luck!
