The best part of being a HC is...... Having the final say in every aspect of your program (personnel, scheme, schedule)
The worst part of being a HC is..... Having the final say in every aspect of your program (fundraisers, parent meetings, disgruntled parents cause little johnny isn't playing, dealing with that one AC who doesn't get it)
The best part of being an AC is..... You never see your name in the paper because of a big loss
The worst part of being an AC is.... You never see your name in the paper because of a big win
The best thing about our program.... Most of our guys are bought into the program and those that aren't usually can't handle the peer pressure to stick around very long.
The worst thing about our program.... only one of our staff actually teaches at the high school... we have a self-employed construction worker, a preacher, middle school teacher, and business man.
The best thing about the offseason is..... definitely the break
The worst thing about the offseason is..... No football and worrying that your best athletes will get some freak injury in basketball or baseball and be out for the next season or part of it.

Coach, One thing we did to help with our kids dragging ass on Monday and Thursday is we put them in full pads on Monday and shoulder pads and helmet on Thursday. Monday we watch film first of our previous game and our next opponent. Also on Sunday we meet and use dri-erase marker on the bathroom mirrors in the locker-room writing messages about how long since we beat the next opponent or the numbers of the best players that we need to stop so they see them all the time. After film we go outside and stretch, then do a turnover circuit. Next we go over offense and defense vs. whatever our opponent does. This is just formation and alignment recognition, plus we go over any new wrinkles. Then we go through each special team. Everything is live but the whistle is usually very quick on special teams. After that we condition. This all happened because we had a bad Monday and the HC made the, all go get their gear on and start practice over. Thursday we go just uppers and everything is live on the lines but no tackling.
For us this does put the kids in pads more but being in pads made them focus more and give better effort.

I agree this is a great topic.
We emphasize discipline, emotional/physical toughness, execution, and conditioning.
Discipline we take attendance everyday, we get real picky about penalties at practice, we have other scheduled events outside of practice that attendance is required and checked at, and this season we are adding a new helmet reward sticker of no stupid penalties for an entire game. (stupid penalties include false start, holding, personal foul, etc)
Toughness we do our best every practice to break them down aty the beginning and get them mentally exhausted, then physically exhausted by at least halfway through team period. Then they are at that point they really have to suck it up and focus to make big plays even against the scout team. Also to put more pressure on they know that there will be consequences for not being successful each play. For instance if the scout offense scores on the starting defense or the scout defense makes a tackle for a loss on the starting offense they will have to do some kind of physical running. This helps to motivate them that its better to suck it up and make the play they should instead of take a play off cause they are tired.
Execution we do basically the same as toughness in that when you mess up a play cause of failed execution on someones part we do extra conditioning.
Conditioning as you can see happens throughout our practice when people mess up. Also we spend about 15 to 20 minutes conditioning at the end of practice on most days. This may seem like a lot to some people, but we have seen it payoff the last 2 years so much that we will never do it another way. When its the 4th qtr and ours kids look like they are still in the 1st qtr while the other team has hands on their hips and is gasping we love it. one other thing we do during conditioning is the PCP, Pork Chop Patrol, those kids that you know won't finish in a timely manner, we put in a separate group so they don't slow up the others and can still get their running in.

Have to agree with cqmiller.... This is 17k to coach WITHOUT teaching responsibilities. And yeah I know their is recruiting responsibilities but that could be as simple as making calls or maybe traveling to a school and usually schools have a recruiting budget so travel and meals would probably be covered. Its not the greatest paying job but looks like one of those get your foot in the door jobs and hope for something bigger comes along later. For me it wouldn't work cause I have a family and cutting my salary that much would not work. However if I was single and no family I would probably have major interest. Especially knowing how teacher observations are done now and the way they seem to be going.

I agree with everyone that is saying the punishment needs to be immediate. We do something we call Man-Builders. Basically they start in the back of the endzone and every 5 yards they will hit their stomach and get back up and continue all the way down the field. Occasionally when they have been really bad we will start at the goal line and they front roll for 25 yards, then crawl on their elbows for 25yds, back to front rolls for 25, and finish with 25yds of army crawl. Another thing our HC/DC does is when they mess up during a play in team or half-line he will run them to the other end of the field and back doing hit-its when he blows his whistle. This does take some time but its only for stupid penalties or when the scout team scores/stops the starters. Also makes them have to be mentally tough because they then have to come back and run the next play while tired.
For playing time we have an offense practice day and a defense practice day. If you miss practice that day you can't start on that side of the ball. This allows kids that have legitimate reasons for missing to know they can't start if they miss but will still play. Of course every players situation is treated individually.

On Thursday before the game we have a pregame meal at a local church and parents fix the food for the players. We have youtube videos playing all around the room that show big hits and other things like that. We also have either a pastor or coach give a devotional message and talk about how football and life relate to each other. During pre-game after we have gone through all our indo and team O/D we circle up on the 25 and have 2 guys lay helmet to helmet, a coach throws one the ball and yells hit, they jump up and try to run/tackle. It gets the whole team pumped and has even had an effect on other teams.

Coach we do a depth chart for coaches only in the spring. For the kids we simply do a positions chart and tell them the door is open and their performance will determine the depth chart in the fall. This way you know who you want running in the 1st groups when you scrimmage run team stuff, but it also gives guys the chance to step up and take a position. We also feel that just giving a positioin helps to breed some competition, however nothing I think breeds competition like pulling someone out of a drill/huddle and replacing them with someone else. Guys hate that and know you mean business, as long as you follow through and make the guy you pulled earn the spot back and not just give it to him the next practice.

I have 2 games that stick out for me.
First one was in 2011. We had been considered the doormat of the district coming into the season because of previous records 2 wins in 3 seasons. We enter a must win game to make the playoffs and had yet to capture a signature win for the year. They score on 2 long runs early in the first qtr. We spent the entire first half on offense driving up and down the field but getting shutdown in the redzone. At least 4 trips the 1st half with no points. The defense meanwhile buckled down and didn't give up anything else. End of the 3rd qtr we have to punt and our guy pins them on the 1yd line. Next play our D-tackle burst through and gets a safety making it 15-2 in the 4th. We get the free kick and drive down. 4th and goal we hit our wr on a slant and he gets leveled but holds on to the ball. Now we decide to kick the xp even though our kicker had only hit about 20% of his xp for the season and its game 7. He hits it making it 15-9. 2 plays later the defense causes a fumble and we recover. My wr that scored on the slant comes over and says he has the slant and go so I say what the hell lets do it. One play later qb hits him over the outside shoulder in the endzone. Our kicker then goes out and hits the first back to back xp he had hit since the first game. We are up 16-15 now. Defense played stout the next series and on 3rd and long they tried a halfback pass and it looks like its gonna be an easy catch and score cause our safety to that side flies up playing run. Out of no where our sophmore corner comes out of no where and swats the ball down. They punt and we get a crucial 1st down on 3rd and 7 to ice the game. My Qb was so pumped he didnt realize all we had to do was kneel and run the clock out. Our 1st signature win for our seniors and the new coaching staff.
Second was this season 2012. We are down 21 to 0 with 6 minutes left in the 4th qtr. They are driving milking the clock and just taking it to the defense. Its a sloppy game been raining since 2nd qtr. Most of the crowd has gone home cause these guys are the defgending district champs and we are looking rough. Then on a 2nd down play we knock the ball out of the qbs hands and our DE scopps and scores from 60yds out. Next drive we make them punt and on 3rd down we hit a hb screen for 75yds and a score. 21 to 15 at this point. We have no one that can kick xp so we go for 2 all the time. Their next drive they are moving the ball down the field and the qb fumbles again. two plays later we run the same screen play and dont score but our guys gets it to about the 15 and in the process our wr cracks back on their mlb and knocks him out cold. 3 plays later our qb drops back and the scramlbles up the middle using the official as a screen in the process and scores. We get the conversion and go up 23 to 21. 2 plays later out DT picks off a middle screen and seals the game. We where the only blemish on that teams district record this year as they won the district again.
As a side note we are a small public school and both of these teams are private schools. Here in TN that is a hot topic private v public. So beating these guys was special for our guys.
Both games where amazing and I hope to have many more in my still young career.
