I am a college student looking to find a student assistant spot at a D 1-A school. My buddy wants me to come with him to the AFCA convention to meet some coaches if for nothing else to at least make some future connections and hopefully find a place to be a student assistant. I feel a little weird going because im not a coach yet. I was wondering if their are any veterans to the convention that would be willing to help me meet some people. If anybody is interested, reply to this with details or your email address and we can talk further. thanks

I have been to one national convention in Dallas. It was tons of fun, but it was also very depressing. Coaches all over the place damn near begging for jobs!! At the college level the NCAA allows only so many coaches on staff. Not too sure what the total can be, but this includes full time, part-time and volunteers. You may have a better chance with a Div. II or Div III, NAIA or JUCO. IMO
Good luck.

Unless you a D1 player right now I think it is pretty hard to get a D1 GA or Student Assistant right off. You might need to do a limited earnings postion at a smaller school and work your way up. That is just my opinion. check this site... www.footballscoop.com

True what Coach JD said about limited positions, but alot of coaches get around this by designating a ton of coaches as Weight Room personnel. So they will have a "bench press" coach, "Incline bench press" "squat coach" ect....i know for sure one D1 school in Colorado does this or at least used to. I think a good way to get in with a big college as a student is volunteer to be a ball boy/water boy/equiptment manager. You get to see how a D1 team is run and who knows maybe if you work hard, someone will give you a job.
