Get some of those skill guys to play line. Has that ever worked for you? If so, how? The OP says that he coaches 5A ball in Texas. Even if you do convince a 170 lb. WR to put on #63 I doubt that playing him at guard is a winning strategy.

Tons of backup linebackers/tight ends/RB's have been standout linemen for us on both sides of the ball. You get smaller, but quicker guys. This is especially great on defense since we're an odd front team that plays with a lot of movement. do we get beat on wedges and dives occassionally? yes, but the movement of faster, aggressive guys causes headaches for o-lineman We're a power spread offense so I tell our guys that we only have 1 tight end and 1 running back on the field at a time, but we have 5 linemen out there at once I'd rather have a small, quick guy who can get in front of a defender and stale mate than big slow guy who causes havoc when he gets into a defender, but rarely if ever actually gets into him because he's too slow. Truth is they don't like it at first, but once they see it's giving them playing time, they thrive in it.

I'd be lying if I told you I know what that means. But I do know that California teams keep beating up on Texas teams.

It means that a school in one of the largest classifications in the state probably couldn't use an OL that small.

The thing I don’t get about everyone wanting to play receiver is that even if you’re a good one in a passing offense. If you get 5-6 receptions a game, that’s considered pretty good. If I were an ego guy. I’d want to play RB where 15-20 touches a game is more likely.

Our DE's (Even front) have always been athletes. When I talk about linemen, the kind that some kids might not like to be, I'm thinking OL and DTs.

Most receivers are contact shy in my experience

Get some of those skill guys to play line. Has that ever worked for you? If so, how? We once moved a wing in a double wing set to guard and he ended up all state OL/DL. He moved because we literally had no other linemen. He weighed about 175.

10dencyofdeception In the off-season... Question #1...How many 7 on 7 competitions do you schedule for your "Skilled" kids?? Question #2...How many OL/DL competitions do you schedule for your "Big" kids??

I just took a head coaching job. I’m telling all the linemen if they make perfect attendance for summer workouts I will give them the ball at least once in a real game. I’m probably a little out of the box but that’s my crew.

In my experience kids quit for one of two reasons: 1. They’re not having fun. 2. They feel like they aren’t good or can’t be good in the future. OL is a lot of being very bad for a long time before you are decent, so this one is very dangerous. Fixing #1: Make OL the fun place. I got a thank you card for attending a grad party. The kid was a safety- he said he would miss the water breaks when our OL ran over and told him all my terrible jokes. We do fun (and useful) stuff like time them through the chutes or race through the chutes 3 at a time- the winner gets to go get a drink. The slow kids keep going until they are a winner or the ultimate loser. We play as many different guys in games as possible- especially on D but also a little on OL. We always hold bags in Indy to decrease contact load without sacrificing speed or technique. Fixing #2: Trick them into thinking they are good or getting better. Show as many good clips in film as possible. Teach them the “low hanging fruit” to be “less bad” i.e. maximizing splits for a kid who always gets beat so that he loses far from the ball and his guy never makes a tackle. Always point out when they have done things correctly and it helped them. Sometimes I’ll throw in a “Dang I can coach!” not to brag but to help them connect the dots between our coaching, their doing it correctly and us having success. Use mixed-ability squads with equal reps when not in season so they all believe they have a chance to be a dude. Thought this was really good. We always, even at really good programs, took it easier in spring. Shorter practices, less physicality. Try to make it fun. Relationships matter. Coaching a terrible team that was for sure gonna go 0fer and did, we would take 20 min every wed and play touch football with the lineman. I was QB. They loved it. Worked the crap out of them monday and tuesday, but they were gonna love Wed and everyone knew we were getting killed on Friday. You have to also help encourage their relationships with each other. My favorite coaching jobs weren't the most successful teams I coached on, but they were the ones where I liked being around the other coaches and players the most. A few years later, we stunk again and we were thin on the line. I did a whole lot more drill work with bags and sleds. Never did that most of my career, but felt like if I was a better teacher and stickler for the little things, we could get better and not bang on each other as much to avoid injury and misery.

Has anyone ever made a banner of some type specifically for linemen? Was thinking about putting a banner in the weight room only for offensive linemen names that blocked for a 1,000 yard rusher. I think that would get the kids excited.
