I thought I understood how/why a kid earns "stars" I guess I don't. We have a kid that Miami, Texas AM, Virginia Tech and others have offered. Kid has 0 stars or a rank on 247...

Stars are based on the camps that these ranking services deem as being of value. If the kid has not been to any of these camps he wont earn "stars" It is a money grab in my opinion. Kids are much better going to college camps and letting themselves be seen by the coaches that will actually be coaching them

Just gone to college camps and a couple of other camps. To be fair, I'm not a fan of the "Stars" stuff.

It depends on how old he is and where you are in the country. If he is young and your not in a hotbed it could take longer to get evaluated. The offers will drive his evaluation. To be clear offers are what drive this. So getting offers are the most important part, not to mention they are what you sign.

The "Star" concept is not something for which I have ever jumped on the band-wagon. I agree that it is based on camp attendance or who has the money to attend those that are high-profile. I lend more credence to those players who have earned the stars due to "bird dogs" having seen them in competition or practice sessions, or coaches who actually have seen them on a significant sampling of film/video/dvd (if not at an actual game). I'm old-fashioned, but there is far more to the individual player than how they looked a particular camps, etc.

While most of us may not lend any credence to stars, and rightfully so, rest assured that college coaches do regardless of what they say. Why? Because that's how their recruiting classes are ranked. If a team lands a boat load of 5 stars, their recruiting class ranking is higher. You may say "But recruiting rankings don't result in wins?" You would be correct, but recruiting rankings help keep coaches employed and that kind of matters to them.

You win with 5 stars, then.... you're supposed to. You lose with 5 stars, then those players didn't pan out.
You win with 3 stars, then you're a good coach and could do better if you'd recruit. You lose with 3 stars, then your program is problematic and you need to go.

If they are real offers then he will soon. If they are "Hey heres an offer but before we really offer come to our camp..." then he wont. Think alot of those sites just ride the coat tails of others and point out the obvious when giving out stars and there is pressure to give out stars when a kid gets looks from colleges to boost that colleges profile up. You don't think the "regional scouts" don't have ties to the schools?
