I did my student teaching at a school that closed for the beginning of deer season every year. It was pretty common to see almost every truck in the parking lot with gun racks (and Guns on them). Not sure if that would still fly today. I taught (but did not coach) at a school like this...oddly enough their football program ran well enough that it wasn't a problem there. Even in college we would get freshmen from the North Country sticks on the team that would mysteriously be gone around the start of bow season or gun season.

He stops his car on the driveway the kids have to cross to go back into the building. He gets out of his car and starts waving his hands in the air and shouting. He’s literally herding the kids back out to the practice field. The kid can’t believe it and me and the OC are just incredulous. But, he succeeds in getting the kids back out on the field and sure enough, he keeps us all there until almost 7pm. And because he just got there, he’s all fired up and enthusiastic. The rest of us…not so much. I'm definitely continuing into the building and going home. That year was soul destroying. The school day was over at 2:35 but we didn’t start practice until 3:30pm because that’s when the HFC was able to get there. I would just stare at the clock in my classroom like a prisoner on death row waiting for the hour of his execution. The big difference was, unlike the permanence of an execution, my torment was repeated each day until football season ended. 😂

I did forget about a youngster who played football for me once who couldn't practice for 2 weeks in August because he got his ears pierced and the tattoo artist who pierced them wrote him an excuse saying that he couldn't put on a football helmet for 14 days. When he didn't get to play in Game 1 due to 10 missed practices, and we also did 2-a-days back then so it was likely more than 10 practice sessions missed. The guy didn't even come to hear and observe what we were doing for those days he could not wear a helmet!

Coaching baseball one season, had a kid miss a game on a Saturday because his girlfriend supposedly was making him go to her dance recital instead.

The thing is, he wasn’t a bad guy. Probably a great next door neighbor. The problem was that football was way more important to him than it was to everyone else. He used to get upset with me because when practice was finally (mercifully) over, I would head immediately to my car and go home. Him? He wanted to stand out on the practice field and talk about the 3 and a half hour practice we just had for the next 45 minutes. Again…not a bad guy. But totally lacking in self awareness.

I think I've worked on that staff before. Was he a big "watch film for hours while lamenting how little a chance we have at winning" guy? If so, i know I've worked for him.

This was when I was a player in my youth football days. During pre game warmups we realized one of my buddies, who was a bit of a brick, was missing. The game was about to start and still no sign of him until he casually walks up to the team huddled up and says, "Sorry coach. I took some cold medicine and I accidentally took the nighttime version."

Some that i've had either as a player or coach Word Series Parade Dentist appointment Doctor appointment Birthday party for someone else Overslept Girlfriend was sad My Jr year, Dan Quayle visited my hometown on the campaign trail. They had a big rally on the square. We had practice and I think a few fringe kids skipped. I was a two way starter and in retrospect, I wish I'd have gone. It would have been far more memorable than pretty much anything that happened that season. If that was a Cubs WS parade that might be acceptable for me. JK.

This one is incredibly common here in the mitten, including from some coaches.

Can confirm. Worked for a grinder and we went 1-10. We did meetings after practice every day, were in the office 4-5 hours on Saturdays after the kids left film. It was miserable. Contrast to where I'm at now. We walk off the practice field and leave, are trusted to do what we need to before the next day from home. We will group chat after everybody's kids are in bed about what we need to, but there isn't even an huge expectation that everybody participate in that. We are coming off a semi-final run this year, so not bad. F grinding for the sake of grinding. It's still just football at the end of the day.

-I have to go home after school, my mom texted me our cat just died. I coach back in my hometown, and my kid sister still attends the HS. I went to pick her up before our practice and her band practice one morning, and our family dog was dead that we got when I was a 9th grader. I barely made it through practice. I may as well have not been there. I would probably feel the same way if the cat that I totally definitely don't like at all and was certainly my wife's idea and not mine died. Still hilarious.
