What is the deal with kids wearing a hoody under their shoulder pads? The hood hangs out the back out of the top of the jersey. It looks so dumb.

So I put myself out there as a potential moron by saying I think delta's point was why a HOODIE as opposed to some other type of cold weather gear that does not have a hood.

Because hoodies are a popular clothing choice, ergo they are already wearing them.
Granted its a safety hazard, and I will send a kid back to change if he has it because of such. But I will take hoodie under the pads kid over polo under the pads kid; that kid is usually a space cadet.

I have seen them with the hood up under the helmet. Assume you're referring to HS players. NFL and (at least) P5 college teams that play in northern climes have suits similar to those worn by cold water divers. No need for hoodies.

There's alot of stuff that kids do to look cool that dont resonate positively with those who are not in their generation. Then again there's alot of stuff that other generations do to look cool that kids now think looks dumb too. A circle of fashion judgement.

I saw a picture in the paper yesterday of a kid at basketball practice wearing shorts over tights. Not a big deal. Except the tights had one long leg and the other leg didn't show out of the shorts.
What the hell is up with that?

What the hell is up with that? Great marketing by Nike. Imagine the aggregate savings in raw materials if you can get kids to pay the same price for tights with only one leg.

For whatever reason, hoodies are just the choice of fashion. Our students will wear hoodies and sweatpants early in the school year when temperatures are in the upper 80s/low 90s...and then complain all day about being hot.

We give out hoodies with logo (regular sweatshirt type). This year we gave out a T-shirt type one as part of our gear.
I made my guys either tuck in the hood under their jersey or if they wore it under the helmet, then it had to stay on the head. Our kids don't always have much, so the real deal cold weather gear is sometimes beyond their means and they just make do. Almost all kids have one/some b/c they are cheap and they work effectively versus cold weather.
I've actually still have somewhere one that was issued to me in HS. It is actually a double layer hoodie and was big enough to fit over the shoulder pads.... think the material double thick inside/out. When I was 2nd/3rd year of PeeWee football, that actually was my thought when my grandmother asked if I need anything for the football season. I asked for 2 zip up hoodies (1970's); one in my team's colors to just to wear, and another in the same color 3 times too big so it would fit over my shoulder pads...... everyone was so jealous at my fashion chops....
Also, the fashion aspect of it. But the hood itself serves a couple of purposes for today's kids. 1- it hides their ear buds 2- it is way to tune out/check out of the situation 3- it is like the blinders that are/were used on mules/horses to keep them focused/unaware of things on the periphery 4- it can also be a coping mechanism 5- it can kind of serve like a portable/wearable 'heavy' blankets that some to deal with certain issues

As a freshman I wore a crewneck under my pads for a late season game that was in the 30s at game time. Had to take it off at half. I about dehydrated myself. Never wore anything heavier than a T-shirt the next 7 years I played.
It just doesn't get get cold enough in Central Illinois until maybe deep into the playoffs to wear a whole bunch of heavy stuff. IMO of course. But, the again, I wore shorts to every game until that season I lost 40lbs.

I had a JV/soph call up for the playoffs in the 2nd round (middle of Nov.) get his testicle rolled up during warm up b/c it was in the 30's and he had 2 pairs of thermal underwear on. I guess it was the high knee overs. I had a kid come up to me and tell me, "Jimmy is in pain" about the time to head up to the box before the game. I went to him and asked what was going on, but he said he was okay. "Are you sure?". "Yeah Coach, I'm good". Come to find out the next morning his mother to take him to the emergency room after that game and he had emergency surgery to 'unroll' his testicle cords so he wouldn't lose a nut. The kids ended up being a tough hard nosed, step slow, undersized, mean as a snake starter for me at safety.

I want to know the fascination with kids wearing pajama pants over their pants on the bus to games. Wearing pajama pants initially was kind of a sign that you were above needing to think about fashion itself and that you were good with just being relaxed and didn't need to try to impress everyone. Though I remember the running joke decades ago about the sorority girls who would spend hours each morning doing make up, but wore pajama pants to class because they didn't need to dress up and try to look a certain way to get your approval. The whole pajama pants thing has carried on in the same vein, and now has just worked its way into popularity so many follow the trend.
