I’m sure we all have a story about being fired or being in a toxic situation, here’s mine.
After 4 seasons as the HC my principal told me they were going in another direction. He wouldn’t give me any other details. I was only allowed to email my team that I had been fired. To be clear, I did not break any rules, I was likely fired because my admin didn’t like me.
Honestly, it was blessing. I hated the admin and their policies (They didn’t like when I disagreed). The community’s expectations and reality were no where close. The facilities were neglected and no one seemed to care. I went through 3 ADs and 2 principals in 4 years. I loved the kids and my assistants and that is the only reason I wanted to stay.
I learned some good lessons along the way. 1) Don’t take a job to take a job. If it isn’t the right fit, walk away. 2) If your admin isn’t supportive of what you’re doing, walk. 3) Don’t stay in a s#!+ty situation for anyone. 4) If your AD is also the basketball coach, get the F out. 5) There are plenty of low paying, under appreciated jobs out there.

6) If the admin used to be a band director there will be problems At my last head job Band Director was my JV coach for three years. Best assistant I had. Of course he had played D-III College Football so he wasn't your typical band guy.

OMG! This is danged near a carbon copy of one of my jobs. All 6 pts were dead on. My very non supportive admin who wanted to win but didn’t help facilitate it were as follows…Supt.-Former music teacher. Principal-Former basketball coach. AD- was the current music teacher. You can draw your own conclusions as to the total amount of sports and coaching knowledge they had. Took the job due to a series of unforeseen circumstances. None of which were good. I’d have been better of being in the private sector and working my way back in teaching and coaching than going there. Only plus we’re some good kids who are still friends today

6) If the admin used to be a band director there will be problems My experiences have told me to trust band directors a lot more than basketball coaches lol. Like the original post; we had an AD who was a basketball coach once (assistant B-ball coach with a very narcissistic varsity HC). Constantly nagged the football staff on behalf of the head coach for having the audacity to have summer football workouts when his players could be going to basketball camps and playing AAU. The first band director (when I was in high school) sucked, but the guy who's come in since and for the past 10 years has been outstanding and worked really well with the football coaches to really set up the ideal game-day atmosphere.

Once had a band director who for the life of him couldn't understand why the gate wasn't split 50/50.

My first and only HC job, I was fired for "gross insubordination". I guess that's better than being fired for being a bad football coach! 😆
