Every once in while you start to think that you have seen it all, and then something comes along.
Play off game. We are behind by 1 score, last play of the half. They have the ball on our ten.
They call a run play and we stop them. However.....
Our CB had lined up off side. Now, I am not talking about "in the neutral zone" or "foot over the line". He was fully behind the WR that was spread out and on the LOS. He was about 4-5 yards on the other side of the ball, looking 90 yards downfield into nothingness. He had played the entire first half up to this point lining up correctly.
It's on our side of the field and I am about 20 yards away from him. Didn't fully comprehend what I was seeing at first, then yelling at him to get back to the other side of the LOS. Looked at me with the blank stare and lifted his hands in the shrug pose.
Penalty. Can't end the half on a penalty. Of course they score on the free play. We go on to lose the game.
He had no response as to why he lined up like that.
Proper stance at least, I can give him credit for that.

5 or 6 years ago we called press man coverage and our guy pressed the hell out of their slot receiver, our guy was further behind their side of the LOS than their OL was.
Best thing was a week or two later the same thing happened in an SEC game. Our DB coach came to meetings with a picture of it and let us all know he was just coaching big time college techniques and to quit giving him crap.

breakerdog the joys of coaching HS football. Once had a RG line up a yard ahead of the football. He's right next to the Center and the ball. Not a WR or DB (I did have Corner do that once and actually cost us a game). He had never done that in practice. Never seen an Off Side like that before (or since). Nor I'm sure had the Linesmen. Now he was a Sophomore making his first Varsity start. But it wasn't his first play of the game. When I asked him about it he had no explanation (he was not concussed or otherwise incapacitated).

Then there was "famous Sheamos," a 9th grade substitute finally getting in late, in a game at Defensive End. We were running a 3-4 and he was supposed to be in a 2 point stance, just outside of the TE.
Except, he is playing in a 3 point stance.
Another coach yells out: "No, no Sheamos, the other way!"
At which point Sheamos turns 180 degrees, still in his 3 point stance, but is now facing the Defense.
The TE across from him was just as bewildered as he was.

Once put in our third-string Corner late in a game we were winning by running clock.
Opponent refused to surrender, still had their starting QB-WRs et al in the game.
I yelled at said Corner "Loosen up!" (as in 'back up,' line up deeper) anticipating them to throw a Fade at him.
He started doing Jumping Jacks.
And they threw a Fade over him for a TD.
So much for coaching.
Truth be told he probably couldn't have lined up deep enough to stop that play (the WR went to a Big Ten school to play football, our Corner went to local CC to learn computer programming).
And he was such a good kid I couldn't really get mad at him.

Put a JV WR late in mop up duty once. He lines up two yards offsides. Penalty.
Of course he is on their side of the field and cannot hear any of us yelling for him to back up and align properly. The penalty is enforce and both the offense and defense move back 5 yards yards. Except for him. He is now 7 yards pass the LOS and collects another penalty.

This involves three NFL players.
Pre-season scouting. We play team A the next week. They have two future NFL players. They are playing team B who has a future NFL player who this is about.
The kid is a transfer from Africa and playing in his first football game (scrimmage) ever. He plays DE in a three point stance all game. They try him at Mike in the 4th quarter. A kid helps him line up at 5 yards depth over the center. Right before the snap, you guessed, he gets in a three point stance. 😂😂😂
PS - as they were walking out to warmup, a coach was helping him get his pads on correctly and get his jersey on.
He now plays o line in the NFL.

Speaking of weird offside stuff; my first year coaching hs football we had a kid lined up at TE who realized he had lined up on the wrong side. Instead of running behind the OL and QB to the other side he, for whatever reason, runs down the LOS between the OL and DL, hops over the football in the outstretched hand of the C, and then lines up in his spot. Obviously ref flags him for false start/offside. I asked him about it later and he just shrugged. This is a 4.0 student who walked on to play TE in the big ten
