I've heard the name Carioca since I was in Pee Wee sports. I've never though about where does the term Carioca come from? And why is the exercise named this?
Yeah, sure, I could Google it...but where's the fun in that?!?!?!

It means running laterally (side to side) crossing your legs over as you do so.
I don't recommend it because a) you don't want to do that in a game unless on your first move you are turning to run in pursuit, b) you might give up CutBack if you're doing so, and c) possible to pull a groin.
Shuffling with shoulders square-feet under armpits much better movement.

Just talking about opening the hips up with and an upper body and lower body twisting action like carioca that is not found with shuffling. Don't think this that big of deal one way or the other.

Also its a pretty good way to work on knee drive. We always try to focus on knee drive and hips as overall athletic development goals. Carioca is beneficial in development of these as well as evaluation.

Especially when doing Carioca half the movement is in opposite direction - i.e. if athlete is going to his left, half the movements have his left leg crossing over to the right? Pardon my ignorance, but how does that help you in "evaluation" and how do you do it?

Similar to those who study with it in A-Skips

Developing knee drive helps develop into a better overall athlete, which helps them be a better football player.

I think it is also beneficial is helping to learn to flip your hips. Example tracking ball or something, anticipating it say over your right shoulder but it ends upcoming to your left, so you flip your hips and turn.
