I think this opposite of most small town adults who romanticize their athletic careers Agreed. I work with a guy who is a great guy who frequently wonders aloud if he'd only got a shot to play D1 if he'd have made the NFL. He was not a starter on his D3 team. People are delusional. I wonder how many of us as coaches were more self aware and that made a difference in our paths. I got a recruiting letter from Purdue when I was in high school and my stepdad was a huge Purdue fan. He was super excited and wanted to go on a visit and told all his friends and stuff. But right away I told him it was either a mistake or something they sent to thousands of kids. I knew I was not a Division 1 athlete and never would be even when I was 16.

I knew I was way too short to play D1. I know at 6'1ish it wasn't like I was a midget, but I wasn't amazingly talented to overcome that issue. I wasn't terribly slow (5.2ish- I ran a 5.5 at 40), was pretty strong, was a good blocker, very coachable, knew the game, I just didn't have the pop to get over my stature. Put me in a 6'4 frame and I think I'd have had the talent to play some OL at an FCS school.

I was a 5'9" 200 pound lineman. I was the number 2 at both Guards and Center. I was very smart and had really good technique, but I wasn't big, strong, or fast enough to ever really have a chance at playing anywhere. Our team was really good though, and I was more than happy to be an excellent teammate and scout team player. I'll always say the accolades I'm most proud of in my playing career are JV Most Improved Player as a sophomore and Most Valuable Teammate as a senior. My favorite type of player to coach!

2 yr starter in HS (OL + LB). All Conference/All-State OL, captain as senior
4yr starter at D3 school OL, 2yr captain. I had no business starting my freshman year (was just hoping to make the team), but the starting center violated his parole and never made it back to the school. Slid to center from guard. Started and never looked back.
3x All Conference, All Region, Pre-season AA. Was blessed to be inducted into my college HOF.
I was smarter & tougher than I was talented for sure.

An overrated 4 Tech DL & underrated OT at 6’3” a very strong 195 pounds. Benched 255, Squatted 365 & Deadlifted 400. Never had a timed 40, but I am likely the biggest 2:05 800 meter runner ever. At a Class C team at a school of 300 students I was no more than the 8th best player (9 of us played both ways) as a junior & maybe 5th best player as a senior (8 of us played both ways). Earned 2nd Team All-Conference DL as a Jr & 2nd Team All-Conference OL as a Sr. I made one play when I was completely UNBLOCKED at the 19:01 mark of the video as a DL & it sparked the turning point of the 1st playoff win in school history. I think everyone including my coaches thought I was a better playing DL than O actually was. Really cool knowing I made a big play that played a small part in an amazingly historic season for a small HS in rural Michigan! My cousin's son is a 3 year starter at running back for Ubly right now. Hoping they go on another run. Really?!? Where are you from?

Didn't play until jr. year of HS, started as a senior, small high school. Started 2 games as a frosh in college, then every game for next 3 years as an OT at a D-3 school...we would have been d-4 if there was such a thing. Under the only in D-3 category...our qb my senior year withdrew from school after eligibility check was made...took the money and partied and played ball...none of us knew, he went to class and everything like he was still enrolled. He was doing the same thing in the spring and was on the baseball team...the AD pulled him off the bus headed south for the spring trip when eligibility was taken and he wasn't enrolled as a student. We never saw or heard of him again.

From Freeland originally, but Mom is from Bad Ax and Dad from Harbor beach... Coached in the Lansing Area and SW MI when I lived in the state. Saw they made it to the finals. Should be a great game... The pictures of the snow in Petoskey were crazy.

A little off-topic, but D3 football has come a long way since I played ('92-'95). I was a 3-year starter at a D3 school that made the playoffs in 1992 but I don't think I would even make the travel team for the D3 school my son plays for now. And it's an average program, at best.

I definitely wouldn't fit the style of football my alma mater plays and plays against. Not a lot of need for run stuffing 3 techs against 4/5 wide chuck ems.

Uhhh, not very.
Started as a senior in HS and was a significant contributor as a junior - chronically underachieving private school who has become a powerhouse in the 1-2 decades since I graduated.
Played D3 for a couple years and only made the bus because I tried hard and knew what all five OL had to do on any given play...though I probably could not have effectively achieved it.

If I was the same player now that I was back then, I'm not sure I could make it four years at my alma mater. And, they consistently go 4-6/5-5/6-4 in a not great conference.

All State in Florida my senior year. Ranked one of the best 24 players in Northeast Florida my senior year as well. Starting offensive lineman at a D1 school my senior year of college.

I was 5’10” 180 lbs center. Quick, not fast. Was voted All-State. Not sure I was, but was definitely on the best team.
