1. Be true to your philosophy, but adapt to your personnel. 2. Don't be afraid to try something new if it works for your program. 3. Be committed to your style of football through thick and thin.

No help is better than bad help. As long as kids are giving great effort and attitudes are staying positive, the season is not near as rough when wins are not there. Amen to that. I will be VERY particular about coaches I bring in, if I am in the position to do so. I have been called a dictator before, so be it. When its my job/kids food on the line I'm gonna be very certain that the people I allow to be a part of the program are gonna do what I tell them to do

The biggest mistakes I've ever made staff-wise were bringing in guys just because we had an opening. You're better off having one less coach thing bringing in the wrong guy. When I first took the HC position here I kept all 7 assistants from the previous staff. 5 of them were awesome guys and 4 of the 5 are still here with me. The other 2 were douchebags who were a constant drag on the program until I fired them in week 2 and week 9 of year 1 respectively. They said the right things to get retained and had me fooled. I was 23 years old at the time and these guys were locals who had played and coached at the school, in retrospect it was a really risky move to fire them but I was young and dumb enough not to know it. Never compromise on staff. Ever

I've got a guy who needs a lot of guidance, but he really WANTS to be there and is a good person who will be loyal and dedicated. I'll get him to be an effective coach eventually. Negative presences/influences need to be excised ASAP though. Just can't have it.

The same HCs that say they want good, "Christian" men on their staff also tell their assistants "get your ass up here right after church so we can watch the same clip of GT counter 157 times"
It is finally starting to seem like the 9am to 1 pm Saturdays and 1pm to 6pm on Sunday thing is going by the wayside. We are gone by 11 am on Saturdays and meet from 1-3 on Sunday. If you can't make it, make contributions via text or the live Google Sheet. Seems to have worked for us the last 3 years.

That'll get rid of a lot good and bad. I've moved down to middle school 4 yrs ago. Doing 28 yrs of those days did me in. Middle school is sweet and the pay is almost the same.

There not many “good” coaches who are hireable Yeah there are. Glad you’re back 🙄 How many coaches with families would move to the middle of a ghetto, or any place where there is zero chance to win, or the hc is a moron? With a 10k stipen. Good coaches do not just take any job, hence part of the reason why they are good coaches. And you can put head coaches in that discussion as well.

This is why I am pulling for the Indianapolis Colts now, though I have no other rooting interest in them. Jeff Saturday got the head coaching job with no NFL or college coaching experience (he was a few games over .500 as a high school HC). The pundits ripped into the team, the owner, the coach, etc. How can you hire someone to be a HC who hasn't paid their dues, spent years in the grind, worked their way up the ladder? Can you imagine the arguments you can lay foundations for if he wins, if he is successful? Maybe all the beliefs the media and society as a whole try to spew about the coaching profession are wrong? Maybe you don't need a decade of 16 hour days grinding your way up to be a good HC? And if those long help beliefs can be challenged, or at least re-analyzed, what else could?

I do follow Football Scoop... love Saturday's response to the haters... it's al lot like the political haters to outsiders like Trump in the recent years....or like education : "You can only understand the nuances if you buy into the book club"...

I get what you are writing, he is an nfl guy so he has that built in connection. But Something that hasnt happened in over 6 decades is pretty unique, and hopefully can lead to some homest evaluations about what is and should be required of coaches and players

Our situation was very different this year. The HC that was hired in the spring had to leave 2 1/2 weeks into season (on a Wednesday of week 3) for personal reasons due to insurance with his disabled son. When he left, it was in thoughts that he will return after Jan 1st when supposedly his insurance deal gets solved, but that is not 100% guaranteed. I was only one during the spring for workouts cause he stayed on at his old school for remainder of the school year. He came down and we did spring together just me and him. Over the summer we picked up 3 volunteers after me and him started most of June together. When he left, I took over. One volunteer wanted to be a coordinator but we had different philosophies. We were SBV and he wanted to go spread and power wishbone running. I wanted to continue running Veer of course, so we did. We did make a change from SBV to Flexbone due to injuries in the backfield. With the former HC we met on Sundays for couple hrs and talked about what changes needed to be made and everything was discussed from wishbone/spread/power I, to more SBV…I was DC and other volunteers would always suggest changing something, and HC was a SUPER GOOD GUY, and would let them speak their peace. We would try a little bit and struggle all around cause we wasn’t good at anything. After I took over, we met twice more on Sundays again in person, and they wanted to talk about changes, and I told them Veer was what we are going to do. We just needed to work on the fundamentals of football. I guess they got butt hurt cause they felt like they didn’t get a say in anything. Since I was only one that knew what we were doing offensively and defensively I called both sides, but gave each a special teams they could be in control of. Guess some wanted more, and thought I was trying to do everything myself. We met after that on Google meet on Sunday nights for about an hr and half, we would go over small details of things that we needed for that week, and discuss who to attack with our options. Kids would get on afterwards and we would go over everything and watch film with them. The volunteer that wanted to be a coordinator was willing to drive down 35 min to meet at school, but wasn’t willing to drive 10 min to get on Google meet at his church where we could get wifi service. I would still ask him his thoughts in the coaches group text and he would always send back doing something completely different than what our offensive and defensive philosophies are as a game plan, and talk about the opposing team. After the second week of me being in charge, I decided to see how much film he watched after he said something about a team i didn’t think was right. Well he only had watched 9 min of film combined for the past two week. Were I personally don’t get a good feel for a team until I watched them for at least a couple hrs and sometimes it takes me longer. Like I thought, he had no clue what the opposing team was doing. He made the comment a couple weeks after that a teams DL was weak and not very good. Our OL came off the field after the second series and said that was the strongest and best OL they played all year. That team went undefeated in our region… I would have gotten rid of all the volunteers and just had former player volunteers I coached help me, BUT I did not, and it was a miserable staff for both them and me. If our HC does not come back, I’ll tell them we have different mindsets and philosophy differences, not saying ones right/wrong, or better than the other… but they won’t be helping, and I’ll have former players help me that I trust.

What I am hoping for, is a shake up to the system where we better evaluate coaching candidates in a more empirical method, as opposed to who just has the longest resume or who can best mimic what the trendy buzzwords are at the time. Its similar to how many teacher raises are tied strictly into level of education or years spent teaching. What if there is a teacher who is really good, but just started, shouldn't they be getting paid more for doing a better job? Similarly, both professions (as I'm sure many others) are not always judged based on competency, as that can be difficult. So we just reward those who have stuck around a long time, in hopes that they learned a lot in their time- or at least have 'paid their dues'.

I would argue that in the NFL, they aren't necessarily giving jobs to guys who have just stuck around a long time. Just a few seasons ago, if you were in the same room as Sean Mcvey for more than a few minutes, it seemed you got an interview to be a HC. Vrabel rose through the ranks pretty fast didn't he? 7 NFL head coaches were born after Dwight Clark's "catch". 20 of the 32 head coaches that started the season were under the age of 50.

Take time to enjoy it. We set the school record for wins Friday with 12. Now in 3rd round of playoffs. Got a great group of kids and it is a lot of fun this year. I am bad not to enjoy the victories. But to want to move directly on to the next one. Take time to enjoy them. Bc the next season you may not have the chance to.

No, 6am every day, Sat and Sunday is a waste of time. Subjective. And subjectively you are not right or wrong. Just a matter of preference. If you know what you are doing, and as a head you are training your staff, its really not that big a deal. If you waited till sat or sunday to do your stuff, LONG DAY. But the people who figured it out, it was not a thing.
