In a few months, I would rather be sitting here thinking "Well, we might have over-reacted to this" versus "Oh, chit, we should've learned from Italy.." It SHOULD look like an over-reaction if the measures work, from what I gather. I have made the analogy to national international intelligence events (like cracking the German Enigma machine in WW2). You rarely hear about the success, because you don't want to give up the edge. In this case, success will be mocked as Hysteria, Over reaction, government overreach etc.

Saw an expert (don't recall her name but she had impressive credentials) on CNN yesterday who said that closing schools would not have much effect on stopping the spread of the virus. Would be interested to see what she said and her reasoning why.

I think she was saying short to mid length cancellation isn't going to work 2-4 weeks.
Most of the country won't be going back to school this year

Federal department of education has already suspended regulations on schools having to test 95% of students, gave waivers to states on evaluations, and lifted the rule on requiring states giving special need students access to all the same services

Since we just had our meeting this morning here is the plan for our district (out until April 6th) 1. All schooling will transfer to Schoology. Honestly for the HS (a majority of us I believe) this won't be that big of a deal. A good majority of us already use it anyway so its just about getting things on there for the kids. I can imagine for our elementary this could be a problem and the really young grades are going to stick with traditional paper packets for the duration. 2. The 3rd Quarter ends today. All of the new grades that will be taken are going on the 4th 9 weeks. 3. Staff is to report on Monday but will not be required to report in the building after Monday. We are however going to be able to come into the building as we would like. The one thing our superintendent (who is handling this as good as could be expected) stressed is that we need to be fluid about everything and understand that there are going to be bumps, hiccups and that we will have some kids are are going to do nothing. We just have to navigate this as best as we can. so buy stock in schoolology and other online options...
That and the TP industry

Minnesota's governor called off school. Teachers (at least in my district) are going to be working the entire time. So there is no time for any hanky around here.

SC schools are closed through March 31. I bet it goes longer. We have to come into work today and tomorrow to be prepared for e-learning.
NYC mayor and Ohio governor both said it is likely that they won't go back this academic year and De Blasio even said this calendar year is a possibility.
I have heard several experts say that closing schools is just one of the many things that we need to do. I am guessing that as testing ramps up, we will see the # of cases explode this week. If we are at 3,000 confirmed, that means we are likely at at least 50,000 in real time. Several experts have said that we have to act like everyone has it, stay home if at all possible, and ride this thing out. If we get to 1% of the population having this thing, then social distancing won't matter and it will very likely overwhelm our country. Pray that doesn't happen.
I think we will work with our two little boys on some school stuff each day. We will exercise some, read bibles, and have some family time. We are gonna go out in the woods and build a fort. Got some good books to read on Churchill, Jefferson, and thinking about buying Gulag Archipelago (that should get me through the winter). Definitely play some wiffle ball and have some nerf gun wars. Just got a couples devotional called Night Lights, so now we have no excuse not to get that done each day. Should be a good time for families to slow down and talk and really enjoy each other. It also makes for an interesting sociological experiment.

You may not know yet, but if you have any details on how "working the entire time" looks, I would appreciate hearing it. Rumors have it our district (I'm in Iowa) will be doing something similar. We're on a four-week shutdown.

My wife who is a teacher told me that last night before I went to work amd the city we live in's school district (not where my kids go) just announced the same thing this morning. Hell, kids probably weren't going to do it before, they're certainly not now.

SC instructed us that e-learning is remedial or enrichment. We are allowed to give participation grades, but we do not yet know how much that will be allowed to count. Homework in our district can only be 10% of 9 weeks grade, so it is looking like these grades will fall under that 10%, but we do not know yet. You guys are correct, that there won't be much work getting done.
Taking some naps with the wife will also be a favorite past time during this break from school.

Are they going to wave all of these state tests? I can’t see how they can count this against the kids?

Mass out for 3 weeks per governor. Limited gatherings, restaurants are doing takeout or delivery only, etc. Luckily my job/pay isn’t impacted yet as I work in retail. It’s been nuts. But as my luck has it I took vacation this week through next Monday so I’ll be doing some self quarantining if my own! Loading up all football and hoop film! Probably play some PS4 too to change it ip

I just posted my first Chemistry lesson on YouTube. It is gonna be a fun spring... on a positive note, I get to represent the state of UT for some new coaching publication "The Coaches Lounge" for next week. Gonna be doing an article on "Developing Your Football Program". Year-Round organization and tricks to develop infrastructure as well as student-atheltes for your program. Should be fun.

Day 1 for us in Iowa was yesterday and I spent pretty much all day watching NFL Network and free agency news. The thing is...I'm really not even that big of an NFL fan. It could be a long four weeks!

We got through day one yesterday. Staff reported on Monday to get the finalized plan from administration and to support each other as needed with getting stiff as Schoology. After that we will not be required back in the building before this whole thing is over, which if you listen to our governor will likely not be till the end of the school year.
I will say though I was presently surprised with how many kids were getting stuff done yesterday. Hopefully that continues as this thing drags on.

We had no school for anyone yesterday, so admins could meet to set up the plan. Our state governor did not announce the close down until 8:30 Sunday night. So, today in literally a few minutes we'll be meeting to see what they've come up with.

We're shutdown for at least two weeks, prepping for an extended period of time however. It's a weird feeling, ya know. For the better part of the last six months, I've had some sort of after school related activity take place, five days a week. Now I have to sit at home, monitor my health & the health of my loved ones, monitor my students. You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone.
I'm spending this time getting to know the game that I love better. We know each other, & getting to know more every day. But now I can grow. Hell, I think the game is going to come out of this thing in better shape than when it went in. I'm going to miss my students, our players, & the time I get to spend in the weight room & on the field with baseball. I'm in my classroom today until 3 pm EDT then after that, I dunno.
I look forward to being more active on this board. I look forward to learning more, all whilst getting to live a little away from the game & school as well. Enjoy this time gents, cherish this opportunity that we get to spend with loved ones & each other.
Stay frosty bros!

This whole thing is dumb. We have been told everybody is going to be socially passed. EVERYBODY. 7 F’s or Straight A’s, everybody is moving up in grade. And then there is talk on top of that, they will proceed to bring the kids back this year, kids armed with that knowledge.

I'm going to cut wood. My lessons will be easy to grade if they come in and count. If this darn rain will stay back might get to work in garden. The only thing will piss me off will be if they make us try to make this up. You can't make up crazy. Been doing this 28 years. Made it through a lot of crap. This can make it through.

Spending this time to be closer with family. I have twin teenage boys and it's easy to get consumed in our lives and differing schedules and lose touch from time to time. Since this weekend we have made it a priority to play cards as a family, eat together, watch tv together, exercise together, pray together, call loved ones, etc.
Has been nice in many ways. I feel like I give so much time to other peoples kids, it's kind of nice to have some time with my own.
I think all in all if we approach this thing the right way we can come out better for it.

What are you going to do when school shuts down for 2 weeks? Might be time to re-frame the original question. It doesn't look like any of us are going to be going back to school in 2 weeks ... and a good chance the places that are closed don't go back for the remainder of the spring semester.
