Best thing we did was not make Football year-round drudgery ("grind"), allowed the kids time to be kids-go on all the HS rides they wanted to experience. I’m all for taking a step back in our profession. I think it would be beneficial for kids, coaches and really also parents. What do you tell you the kids that want to do stuff and being a kid and having fun is being at football stuff?

Coaches, every off season, I try to find 2 or 3 really successful coaches and try to learn about the best things they do in their program that aren't X & O's. Program building, player development, staff development, team building, fundraising, weight room, traditions, etc. for anyone wanting to participate What do you think are the best thing(s) your program does that are NOT X & O's and how has it made a difference for your program?
thanks Weights, Mat Drills, Running Program (& Agilities), Instructions on Leadership & Character, Motivational Speakers, etc. This is in addition to position particulars (QB School - indoors & outdoors, etc.)

Vertical alignment/continuity. Varsity, JV, Frosh all use the exact same language, same plays, same defense, all of it. I've never been in a program that has it squared away like we do. Our players will hear the exact same coaching all four years. Really? If by exact same coaching you are talking about each position hears the exact cues, exact same phrases etc, then thats pretty unique. I would agree. But I am kind of surprised that the same plays and same terms for x's and o's is rare.

He isn't talking about alignment outside of the school building though. I would agree to align beyond the building it requires more than just the HS HC. But to align IN the building (Frosh, JV, Varsity..which is what he said) that is all on the HC

Each of our individual sport coaches do a lot of cool things with their teams. But what I am most excited about is that we are moving rapidly towards a school-wide, unified approach to developing speed and strength.

And your entire athletic department will be greater because of it. I have so much trouble figuring out why ADs don’t require this

Doesnt mean you have a clue as to what you are doing.(not you specifically.)

I have so much trouble figuring out why ADs don’t require this In my neck of the woods frequently ADs are happy just to get somebody who can satisfy the minimum qualifications to coach the team in-season, don't want to scare them off by requiring off-season work too. For example the last school at which I coached only four of 19 varsity HCs were teachers.

I have only worked at 2/5 schools that have had a unified strength program for the boys and only one of those 2 had it for boys and girls.

When our freshmen are learning the offense, they learn the same phrases and cues that they'll hear from the varsity HC. Day to day drill work and whatnot will vary, but from Day 1, our TEs will know to 'scrape paint off the wall' when pulling into the hole on Counter (as an example). Around here you see a lot of programs that have thematic similarities throughout the levels but have definite departures from the varsity on down. Example: One of our league opponents will have an odd front defense at all levels. Varsity will run 50 front quarters, JV will run 50 front w/ SS rolled up to the field in C.1, freshmen will run a 50 C.3. They all run stuff out of the gun, but that's about the only commonality.
