Coaches How much time do you give yourself away from the game once your season has ended? Yes I know there is a ton of wrap up stuff to do like equipment inventory, exit interviews, evaluations, etc. but once all that is done, do you give yourself time away? Do you steadily decrease or what? Our season ended Nov. 2, I just finished my 5th season as a HC, I still find myself watching our film, clinic film, making notes etc. for next year...I have a wife and 3 year old at home and some health issues to address but I feel like if I just all of the sudden stop working, we will not improve as a program...advice? normal? If we consider the beginning of our offseason weight program (No lifting classes) to be when we start, we start up when we get back from Christmas break. In fact, we've sometimes waited until later in January, after exams, since we're not allowed to work out during exams. One year when we didn't make the playoffs we started up a week after the season ended and everybody, players and coaches, were dragging a$$ by the time the season got here.

Week after the season ends we start off season workouts (weights, running, etc). Nothing is mandatory, but if you arent in anything else why not come & lift or run for 45 min? I gave our kids off until the Tues we came back from Christmas break. I needed the time away. Where I am now weight training is during school so I'm off until mid-Jan when we add in the speed camp portion before track starts.

I see both sides of it.
We have kids in weights during the day so I guess officially no time at all off. But also besides working on a highlight video during my plan period I am not doing anything very intensive football wise.
I want to work on a more detailed defensive position priority and drill manual and add video to it to help us all be on the same page a little better next year on the defensive side of the ball. I will probably start that right after break. It will all be done during my plan period or downtime in our weight classes.
Whether you take time away or not? What do you do with all of your time after the season?
After about the first week I am dying of boredom. I am reading, I am watching more tv, my 11 year old is learning guitar so I mess around with him on that, he's also in basketball so I will rebound for him, but as much as that sounds like a lot there's still a 2-3 hours a night where I just twiddle my thumbs and wish it was football season again.

I see both sides of it. Whether you take time away or not? What do you do with all of your time after the season? Live life. In seriousness I drove drivers ed kids a couple days a week, I coached Scholastic Bowl, worked out harder than in season, did stuff around the house I put off for 4 months.

Increased my workouts, am eating better, have already finished 2 books, went out of town to see family, went to see a friend coach out of town, cleaned the apt, bought concert tickets- and- the show is on a THURSDAY NIGHT!
