There’s nothing that annoys me more than having to beg a kid to play. Our third LB is a sophomore and pretty talented but his reaction to asking him to go in is like we asked him to give birth. I understand reluctance to get on scout team but these are varsity reps.
Our lb coach loves the kid and I let him roll in who he wants as long as there are no major issues, but it annoys the piss out of me when a kid that demeanor.
There are bigger problems in the world for sure but man you get to play football...that should spark a little something in you!

the disconnect between parents and reality when it comes to their kids we had two kids (brothers) during summer conditioning that we had to stop letting to the bathroom because they would both ask to go everytime they got tired then they would hide in there for 30 minutes
so they aren't good and got placed on the B team....dad wants a meeting, goes on and on about how hard working his kids are and he just can't understand how other kids who don't work nearly as hard as his could possible be on A team if his boys are on B......there is no winning this argument, how do you tell a guy that no....in spite of everything he believes..his kids are definitely not hard workers...in fact they are really lazy...he wouldn't believe us if we told him anyway. So you just nod your head and drive on

An excuse for everything when being coached
Like I’ll listen to your reasoning for why you did what you did, it might help me fix what you’re doing wrong. But if you have something every time it becomes pretty apparent you’re just making an excuse.

Phantom injuries/illnesses all week during practice that are miraculously healed 6:59 Friday night. Our rule is if you cant practice by Tuesday you sit out that Friday to "heal up". This has significantly cut down on kids trying to sit out practice all week.

An excuse for everything when being coached Like I’ll listen to your reasoning for why you did what you did, it might help me fix what you’re doing wrong. But if you have something every time it becomes pretty apparent you’re just making an excuse. N O E X C U S E S Any excuse for non-performance, however valid, softens the character. It is a sedative against one’s own conscience. When a man uses an excuse, he attempts to convince both himself and others that unsatisfactory performance is somehow acceptable. He is - perhaps unconsciously - attempting to divert attention from performance; the only thing that counts is his own want for sympathy. The user is dishonest with himself as well as with others. No matter how good or how valid, the excuse never changes performance. The world measures success in terms of performance alone. No man is remembered in history for what he would have accomplished. History never asks how hard it was to do the job, nor considers the obstacles that had to be overcome. It never measures the handicaps. It counts only one thing - performance. No man ever performed a worthwhile task without consciously ignoring many a plausible excuse. To use an excuse is a habit. We cannot have both the performance habit and the excuse habit. We all have a supply of excuses. The more we use them the lower become our standards, the poorer our performance. The better we perform, the less plausible our excuses become. Next time you want to defend your sub-par performance, say instead (at least to yourself): No Excuses! Notice the startling effect this will have on your own self-respect. You will have recognized your failure. You will have been honest with yourself. You will be one step closer to the performance habit. You will be a better man for it. We will be a better team!

I'm coaching to correct errors and help you improve. If you have an excuse and won't take coaching, don't expect to play.

Lack of communication... For example, I handed out a September practice/game schedule to all of the kids, left copies in the office and posted a downloadable form on Facebook. I did so in the summer, at the beginning of the season and the last week of August The entire week before Labor day weekend, I reminded the kids that we'd have practice on Labor Day. Yet, I still had a dozen complaints from everyone under the sun about "not being informed" of practice on Labor Day...

I can handle the folks that are polite about it; but I got a little testy when some people were rude about it. One parent went on a rant via text:
"We were never informed of practice on Labor Day. It's a holiday and the kids never practice on holidays! We have vacation plans! He won't be at practice!"
"Ma'am, the information was made available through three different sources on three different occasions, well ahead of the holiday weekend. Practice has also been scheduled later that normal, 5pm, to accommodate travel plans. I have never been a part of a football program that didn't practice on Labor Day and this one is no different. Johnny's absence will be considered unexcused if he misses."

Along the same lines as some others, but I just can't tolerate guys who put in absolutely zero work in the off season and then get upset like they're owed playing time in season.
At least 3 guys come to mind who are pissed they're not getting time right now, but two did nothing all off season and the third is a total jerkoff during practice. None of them put in effort on scout team when they're in, and when given reps in live periods they either screw up or don't try hard. THEN THEY GET MAD AT ME WHEN THEY'RE NOT PLAYING?
That ain't it, chief...

I'd say your two kids sit in the bathroom for 30 min or more and miss practice. Either their in there to get out of practice or you need to take them to the doctor for some type of problem. In fact, we are worried about them and cant let them practice till they come back with a doctors note saying their cleared of whatever is messing with their insides.

Cant like this post enough. I defended them when they changed storage rules but we have had problems with: Adding kids with their school email addresses Practice scripts Assist And sideline Friday night I am not the head coach so I have no say, but if I were I would be starting to consider some alternatives.

As a software guy, I'm constantly appalled that such a poorly made product with bad support makes so much money. When I feel like I've had enough pain from coaching, maybe I'll start a company that Hudl can use their monopoly to crush.

I didn't get one: the kid was at practice. His dad dropped him off. I haven't seen mom around since.

Yes, I think it was. I've had to set some hard boundaries with the parents and the kids in this community when it comes to practice attendance and punctuality. I knew that walking in so I made sure that all rules expectation sheets and schedules went out in triplicate. Unfortunately, it's taken laying down some firm lines in order to get people to figure it out.

I'm the receivers coach.
Right now, its in game when they come back after a drive. "Coach, seam is wide open." "Coach, call post corner it's wide open." Yeah, man, it's open. Because we already threw the ball or handed it off elsewhere and the defender has already come off of you. But good call man. And even when that's not the case, they are never as open as they think they are. A safety sitting at 8-10 will not leave you "open" by the time the ball is out.

Ive got WRs who cant figure out that on Tight Right they are on the left (opposite the TE) and in Tight Right OVER they are "over with the Tight End' but want to run blah blah blah (insert Jon Gruden West Coast Play)

The athletic kids that aren't coachable but feel they're entitled to playing time bug the crap out of me. We -had- a sophomore RB who is ridiculously quick and would do some great things when he actually did them right. He made some great plays at our scrimmage and our first JV game but they were overshadowed by all of the mistakes he made.
But, that was rare because of his attitude; he'd line up wrong, miss blocking assignments, fumble the ball, etc..etc.. All within a simple scheme and because he refused to be coached. He would have been a varsity starter for us but he wouldn't check himself and be coached. We all informed him of that but it did no good. He rode the bench during our last varsity game and got exceptionally mouthy with me afterward. ("I'm better than all of those b-tches!!"). I ran him and told him he was benched for the JV game. He quit the next day.

He never played varsity ball.
