Let’s say you have a nine game schedule and ideally want to play ten games. The only team you can schedule for that tenth game, though, is significantly better than you. Let’s also say that you’re staring at a losing record already and that tenth game will just be one more loss. Would you stick with nine or play ten?

Would that tenth game be the last, or somewhere else in schedule (fill an open date)?

Additionally, is it at home (make money) or on the road (lose money)? If the game is the 5th game and you have a winnable game 6, could game 5 cause you to now lose game 6? Could you have a young team that could be good next year and playing a really good opponent help them for next year? All kind of questions to ask. But from the initial OP, no, I wouldn't schedule it, especially now just a few weeks before the season starts.

1. It would fill our HC game, which was cancelled. That could be changed, though.
2. We are not having a JV team this year and after my current juniors graduate we will go from mediocre to terrible.
3. If we don’t play we will have B2B bye weeks.
4. The game after this date will be our most important region game of the year. At least we could spend two weeks preparing for that game.

Three weeks long time to go between games. Kids could lose interest (especially if you've been losing), practices won't be very good.
I'd play it especially if a home game.
If it was the last game, no.

Your players are only guaranteed 40 games in their high school careers(youre currently setting at 39), I wouldn't sacrifice the chance to step on that field 1 extra time for anything, even if I knew the outcome.
back to back byes is a LONG time, practice quality wont be very good and that in and of itself will probably hurt you guys vs their next opponent.
Play the game, sell it to them as a chance to play 1 more game.

A few years ago I would have said no way, but the last guy I played for wanted to play anyone and beat them and it rubbed off on the kids. If you guys are building that mentality I say play it because there is a lot you will be able to pull out of the game. You grab some of those clips and you put together a little cutup and say "listen things might not have gone well in the end, but look what you did right here to this guy, look what your buddy did to that guy. We didn't get them this time, but they are pretty damn lucky they aren't on our schedule every year because next year we would kick their asss. And since we don't get them again we are taking it out on Such and Such next week."
I understand not everyone is in a position to do it this way but if you are on an upswing it's a good way to approach it.

I would fill the schedule...especially if you have bye weeks in there someplace. Don't risk having too many days off in a row. Now having said that...you certainly don't want to send your guys into a meat grinder. If they just can't physically compete, then there's your answer. But all in all...Let the kids play. It's THEIR team and after all...they signed up to play.
