Coaches,
I'm attempting to put together a list of easy to facilitate competitions to have some fun during the summer as well as light the fire, so to speak. These can be anything...
Here's a start: 1. Rock, paper, scissors tournament 2. Odd/even tournament (choose odd or even and then throw 1 or 2 fingers) 3. Double bubble - who can blow the first bubble? 4. Double bubble - biggest bubble 5. Egg toss 6. Punt, pass, kick 7. Frisbee golf (picking object like the blaster on the practice field) 8. Frisbee golf with a football 9. Tic tac toe (paint grids or use hoola hoops and teams need to sprint to place "x" and "o") 10. Plank (see who can hold position for longest) 11. Relay races 12. Dodgeball

We do one where two kids are in push up position. Then they have to push and pull at each others arms until someone's elbow or knee hits. Kids love it.
We do another one where we circle up and two guys face each other and get on one foot. The circle's job is to keep them in a condensed space. The two kids competing have to push and pull each other until one loses balance and puts his up foot down.
We have done one in the past with a towel, taped at both ends. Kids get to put one (if you want it to go faster) or two hands on the taped part of the towel and they have to pull it back and forth until someone ends up with it solely.

We do one with two kids standing in middle of circle holding 25-lb plate arm's-length in front of body. One who holds it out longer is winner....

If you have larger resistance bands, doing on an individual tug of war competition is a great one. Two start off inside the resistance band facing away from each other and try to pull and drag each other. It's a lot of fun.

Tried that one, somehow it slipped off of one kid as he was clawing and climbing on the ground trying to win and smoked the other kid in the thigh...that was a quick exit from the competition books!

We used sled harnesses for this tug-of-war competition. A bit safer and our players really enjoyed it.

Sock wrestling - everybody enters wearing two socks, the goal is to be the last person wearing any socks.
Leg wrestling is a good time too

One year we did a Home Run Derby on the softball field. Kids got to swing at 4 pitches each. Coaches, I'm attempting to put together a list of easy to facilitate competitions to have some fun during the summer as well as light the fire, so to speak. These can be anything... That was our med ball war. Have never had a kid get a broken nose or shoulder. They are the softer slam balls that can be absorbed. Make sure to set the rules so kids understand. Partner them up with kids the same weight/strength level. Also Hoover ball and modified wrestling. We do lots of combatatives as we call them. We let the parents know what is involved in off seasons and competitions. Kids need to have some sort of competition built in to practice and workouts everyday.

I like the idea of contacting the parents ahead of time. What other combatives do you do?

You can look Hoover Ball up but it's basically played on a volleyball court with a medicine ball. Good physical game that is a great workout and the kids have a blast.

Heard this one at a clinic...blindfold athlete and have them guess Skittle flavor. Here are a couple more: -Egg drop -Capture the flag -M&M's from one bowl to another using chopsticks This one reminded me of one I heard at a clinic. Food Relay Race: Team is split up into groups of 4 or 5. Each kid has to sprint 100 yards and at the end of the sprint is a table with some kind of food that no one wants to eat. But the kid can't run back until after he eats it. Each time a new kid arrives the food has been changed to something else that no one wants to eat. A couple schools said they do it and were comparing the foods they would buy to gross the kids out. They all loved it. They said it was great and kids loved it. They said it showed who was willing to sacrifice for the team. I worry about it in a PC world, but one coach said they used to do dog biscuits and it wasn't an issue but he took it out just to be safe. I guess like they will do like sardines or horse radish or whatever. I don't know if I would it or not but it did sound interesting. I am an extremely picky eater (basically eat off the kid's menu) but I could probably swallow a sardine for the sake of my group.

Love the Slamball Burnout! We are adding it! We use Competitions all Summer and call them our Summer Games. We have a theme for each day of the week that kids look forward to. We divide our entire program up into 8 "Families" with captains for each one. The last 15 minutes of the each summer workout is a tourney for something that will create winners and losers. Coaches coach enthusiasm. Mondays: Relays- any type you can come up with Tuesdays: Team Handball (played w/dodgeball and a trashcan on its side at each end of a 40yd long x 20y wide field. 5v5 Wednesdays: Dodgeball- either Gladiator (use the soccer circle in middle of turf field, four teams battle royale last man standing), or Gauntlet (running through a 15-yd wide tunnel with throwers on both sides) Thursdays: Punt Drill- practice punt alignment and punting the ball and downing it near the goalline Fridays; Tug O War- 1on1, 3-way, and 4-way. We loop tug o war ropes through a tire to create 3-team or 4-team tug O war.

Speaking of medicine balls, a fun one we have done in the past is Med Ball Volleyball. Our field has a fence that divides the field and the track. The two teams stand on opposite sides of the fence and their job is to throw the med ball over the fence and try to have it land on the ground before the other team can catch.

Upright/Crossbar drill - kids get a ball and toss from the (insert what yard line you want) and try and hit the gold. if you want to make it harder, make them call the part of the upright they are aiming for.
FG Challenge - I swear every kid thinks they're a kicker, this is a fun way to build some comp, and also subtly hint that no not everyone can kick.
Plank challenge - Put the whole team up in a plank and let them see who can last the longest. We've allowed them to alternate between reg and push up plank after a certain amount of time.
Relay race - Put a ball on the 10/20/30/40, one kid goes and gets a ball, tags the next kid he goes and gets the next one, so on and so forth.
Run to Rock Paper Scissors - Put the kids on the hashes and on the lines. They run to mid field, call GO and throw up Rock paper or scissors. Winner doesnt have to run back to sideline, loser goes back and touches his sideline and comes back.
Push up war - *Already Mentioned above - Two kids in push up position head to head, swipe at each other to try and get the knee or elbow of the opponent to touch.
Water ballon fight - Great to end a hot summer practice

Tug of war Any variation of relays you can come up with--there are lots of these. different groupings, carry stuff, carry each other, vary the distance, crawl, roll, run, etc What we call railroad tracks....they lie down, the one in the back goes over, he lies at front, then the next, etc Two teams--spread them out. One punts....wherever other side catches it, punts from there....leave field after punting...gets down to 2...which side of 50 is ball on at the end (Do same thing but throwing it) Extra point competition Pile up all bags, cones, whatever they can carry. Relay to pick them up one at a time....it they drop it, they have to leave it I really can't remember all the ones we did
I've been at places where we took 10 minutes a day to do one of these....we'd change up the rules. They had to follow whatever rules we put in place, but outside of that anything was fair game....find a way to win. (by the way---put in a no contact rule on most everything or you'll get guys decleated all over the field--they figure that one out in front. If you want them to hit each other, be careful, make a rule to hit in front, etc---cya

We do competition Wendesday each week. Our team knows at end of practice there will be some sort of competition, either fun or skill related. On our their favorite is Tire War. Split team into four teams. Put a tire in the middle of a 5 yd x 5 yd sqaure. Each team is at a corner. Each team sends one member to the middle. Eahc person grabs the tire with the objective to pull the tire to thier corner. We use the soccer corner kick flags and make the tire touch the post. The flags give so it can bend if player is falling on them.
Kids usually get pretty tired, so we have put in the rule if your hands come off the tire you are out. Team with the most "wins" gets some reward.
