Hey guys,
Wanted to reach out to those of you at small schools to see how you adjust spring practices (as compared to in season fall practice) to deal with low numbers.
It’s very frustrating to have allotted football time but have to deal with many of your best players being out due to track or baseball. (We encourage kids to play other sports btw). But at a small school it’s tough, we don’t have enough numbers right now to field a full scout offense or defense. How do you adjust?
How do you small school guys approach spring practice with the constraints I mentioned above?
Thanks

AA school in SC. We wait until baseball is finished and track is down to the qualifier stage. We may have 1 or 2 still in track at that point.

Go as late as possible to make it possible to get those kids back... and get other guys more reps until they do... Even if you cant go team vs scout... you can still get some good work in... we did alot of INDY when I was at a small school... and also lined up offense vs as many defense as we had and walked thru plays...it was good for some of the other guys that don't usually get alot of reps see the plays happen in slow motion

Don't get so caught up on "getting your guys". It's Spring ball. You get maybe 10 practices tops (we do here) and they're gonna forget half of what you teach them. Focus on getting reps with other guys. You will get them up to speed. Spring football has helped my overall "my kid doesn't get to play" factor. Every kid plays in the spring. Get the base O and D in and get after it. If your numbers aren't good enough for Team then do Indy and Group stuff. If all else fails, teach football in general.

Thanks When I was at a small school, our HC just made it a camp where players would lift, then do "fun" drills for about 45 minutes and go home. No install. No scrimmaging. No plays. I wasn't a fan. My advice would be to install the most basic core offense and defensive schemes you can, then emphasize individual drills, half line, and "fun" stuff like play Oklahoma drill a few times. Use this time to give kids looks at positions they may otherwise not play. Some may surprise you. The worst that can happen is you develop depth. If possible, try to schedule a scrimmage or 7 on 7 for them to compete against another team. Get them on and off the field in 60-90 minutes or so a day, since you don't need to worry about special teams or "conditioning." It's ok to walk through things on air here or vs. trash cans, especially for the skill players. One thing to keep in mind is that you don't HAVE to hold a spring practice if you're HC and your numbers are really low or inconsistent from day to day. At a small school with super low numbers, that's not a bad option. Personally, I feel like Spring Practice is overrated.

Spring practice! Whats that....not a problem here in Wisco...now Summer contact days yes. So we work with the Legion Baseball coach and try and schedule around each other.

At my previous school we started practice at 4 and have the baseball and track guys come when they were done. At my new school we are going to start at 5 and basically the same have them come after the other practices.

We would work a ton of halfline and half field. We might have more group work and less team. Even now we work a lot of half field pass.

Thanks chaps,
I think we allowed ourselves to get a little bent out of shape due to Trying to run/structure our spring camp like we would do things in the fall. I agree with you all use spring to get what you can out of it, make the best of things, do low number drills, have fun.

We are a very small school with many football players who play spring sports and we will use several position only days. We may take only the offensive line or only the QBs & RBs, etc. Also allows head coach and position coach to both work with the group.

Getting ready for our 2nd season of spring ball. Very small school that has not had it in the past. There are many athletes that are in spring sports and the baseball team tends to go deep into playoffs. Instead of stressing about the lack of the main "guys" being there we use it as a chance to evaluate the incoming freshmen and those not in a sport. We get measurables the first few days and run everyone through position drills. Yes, we know the 300 pounder will not be a Wr but we let him have fun for a couple routes. Then he can work on o line stance and footwork. Try to create a fun environment and get kids out that hang back because they are not the guy. Last couple days is basic offense and defense install. Which we work towards with our drills.

Do all your indy and small group work. Combo, inside drill, half line, 7v7, defensively we work alot of circuits pass rush, takeaway, tackle pick one or two and teach it. Good to get dbs rushing and dline working some drops if you do that stuff.
My opinion you get the most out of small group drills in the spring.

Focus on teaching the young guys you have. Don't stress and don't schedule a spring game/jamboree that you have to prepare for with kids you know aren't going to play or ready to play. A lot of times it does more harm than good.
