The clinic thread got me thinking. I’d like to find some really good small schools to maybe visit during the off-season. I’m looking mainly for schools in OH, TN and IN. If anyone is part of such a school or can point in a direction. I would greatly appreciate it.

So my response somehow got vaporized as I was trying to edit it to fix a typo, but in TN I'd take a look at Greenback (230 kids) and Alcoa (660). Both have been throughly dominant for the past 4 years. Alcoa has been dominant forever, but they get unreal talent through that school.

How good and how small? In TN, a couple that you might want to visit in the smallest 3 classes would be Greenback and Alcoa. Greenback has like 230 kids and they have dominated the smallest classification in our state for 4 years running, having either played for or won state each year with a combined record of 49-5, with 3 of those losses in state championship games. Alcoa's interesting because of how it's 600ish students at a public school, yet is thoroughly DOMINANT in our state. They are consistently one of the top few programs across all classes, year in and year-out, and beat schools 3 times their size soundly. And they do all that despite being located right next door to the undisputed top program in our state: 6A Maryville (who took De La Salle's win streak over when Bellevue beat DLS a few years ago). The talent that comes through Alcoa is unreal, though. Is Alcoa where Cobb is from? Those teams fit what I’m looking for. I’m really looking st how they practice and do some other things. We are a larger school but have closer to smaller school numbers when it comes to players and coaches. I know we have a few smaller schools here in KY that compete with larger schools very well. Some of that has to do with where they pull talent from or that they are getting the better athletes out. They also aren’t winning because they are out athleting a bunch of teams.

Alcoa can usually can out athlete most of the teams they face, though. Over the last 20 years they've sent a lot of players to power 5 schools. If you want to go a little bigger, Greenville in 4A (913) is also excellent. Their stud QB just signed with Army, but they don't send a lot of guys to the programs that Alcoa does. One very good smaller school in my old neck of the woods that doesn't get to just out athlete everybody would be Oneida (382 kids). They are very good, very physical, and very well coached without future D1 players walking around. They just run a fairly conventional Wing-T and a 5-2 on defense and kick your @$$. I think one thing you're going to find at these schools here is similar to what you mentioned with some of the reasons for the small KY schools' reasons for success. At a lot of these schools, there's a lot of support for football and a very strong culture that attracts the top athletes to come out and win with them.

GCMS (Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley) High School is on a 24-game winning streak and has had only 1 losing season (they were 4-5 in 2012) since 2004. School enrollment is 312. They won the Class 2a state title last year (2nd smallest class in Illinois) and are a favorite to repeat this year. They won their first round playoff game Friday night 76-6. The high school is in Gibson City, about an hour west of the Indiana border.

I’m pretty familiar with the Dayton area so I’ll see about checking those out. The two northern Kentucky schools aren’t the most open though I know NCC new HC. I’m less than 30 minutes from those schools.

Ohio- Coldwater Indiana- Pioneer Pioneer is a great program. They also have a kid who is a 3 star going to Notre Dame, which just doesn't happen from that classification level. Morris is a little further south (KY, right?). I would suggest Reed May at Brownstown High School........he runs a great program A to Z (weight lifting, grades, practice, scheme, etc.).

If I lived anywhere near OH I would would contact London HS just in the odd chance I got to meet Jim Wendler. My best friend grew up in West Jefferson Ohio which is in that neck of the woods. Don’t know much about their program now but at one point they had fifty plus straight winning season so if you visit London might be worth checking wj out as well.

TN, besides the above mentioned you may want to also check out Huntingdon High School and Union City High School. I second these two. Union City-West TN (Darrin Bowling) has been dominate in 2A in TN. Huntingdon-West TN (Eric Swenson) Like stated before Alcoa-East TN (Gary Rankin) is as Dominate of school other than Maryville the state has. If you go to Alcoa you need to go to Maryville who is just right across the railroad tracks but they are in the largest classification in the state. Alcoa plays with a stack deck year in year out against their classification. CPA- Middle TN (Ingle Martin) Wayne Co- Middle (Rick Rice) These are just a few predominately solid programs in the state. I guess it depends on what your looking for. All of these coaches run different schemes and I would say that have different practice set ups. Sometimes the best programs are not the ones that win state championships year in year out though. I've learn just as much from coaches who barley have over a .500 record as I have some that have multiple championships.

Every coach would benefit from time spent with coach Haywood. How about the single A powers that are close to there? Pikeville, Paintsville, Hazard?

I would say Paintsville without a doubt, for all the KY coaches, Joe Chrico has done an amazing job. Losing to Jenkins with Kash Daniels in 2013, to what they have now is amazing. Best quick building job in a very long time.

Our current weight program is built off his stuff. I would contact him and let him know that. Last year I sent him an e-mail through his website. He responded within a day and he was incredibly gracious. He strikes me as a very “normal” guy. He posted my e-mail on his blog and gave me a gift certificate to his store in exchange. He had no need to do any of that. I was simply looking for clarification on a training issue.
