So I was listening to one of the local radio prep round up shows tonight. Curious to what some other coaches think about this situation :
1) Coach X is a very well known and successful coach in the metro area (coached over 35 years, HC for 18 years with a HC record of 152-61, with 7 district titles, 14 straight playoff appearances and a state title at his second stop.) 2) Coach X retired 5 years ago due to some health reasons 3) During retirement, Coach X worked with the radio station as an in studio 3rd co-host for the friday night prep show. 4) Coach X returned to coaching this year as a position coach after retiring from teaching so he is no longer a regular on the prep show.
So tonight, for the second time Coach X's team's schedule allowed him to be a guest on the radio. The last time he made several comments really knocking his team's performance (they were not really off to a great start) and today apparently they played an early afternoon game. His comment tonight was something like "Well I hope I see a better game tonight than the one I just came from" or something like that (his team lost 48-9)
Not sure why, but I just think his actions seem a bit unprofessional. I mean, I certainly know if he were a 20 something year old guy making those comments it wouldn't sit well with me at all. I don't know Coach X personally, but I do know several guys who speak highly of him.
Just curious what others think

I must have not done a good job framing the situation if the takeaway was that this guy doesn't think his stuff stinks. His comments are all self-deprecating in nature (with regards to the team), and nothing to suggest anything otherwise.
It would be similar to if say a Les Miles type coach (Very successful, but not an all time legend of the game) took a position coaching job at maybe an Oregon State, Rutgers, Illinois, level program and then was on a regional game day show and basically said his team sucked.

I think if you are going to talk negatively about your team you have to keep it in house or anonymous.
Sometimes venting is good but you don’t want it to come back around to sting again. The bad game has already been played and the damage done. If a kid or a parent or anyone close to the program hears the show and brings it back up then the negative parts of the game just linger.
That being said we were 5-0 and lost last night 53-26 and I don’t have a lot of positives to say about things so I could see how in a talking role that kind of comment would come out pretty easily even though the coach meant nothing by it negatively towards the program.

That is kind of my take on it. While the coach is not directing his comments at anyone, and is speaking the truth--the school (his Alma Mater as well as where he as DC helped win a state title in the highest classification 25 years ago) is no longer at the level it was several years ago, it just doesn't seem to sit well with me. I don't think I would enjoy playing for someone publicly knocking me or my friends when there is no need for it.

4) Coach X returned to coaching this year as a position coach This is the issue I see with it. Track record or not, an assistant should not negatively comment about his program on a public forum.

IDK...if the team got their jock strap handed to them, well...everyone already knows they stank up the place.
Criticism of your own is acceptable IMO. Just don't talk crud about the other guys.
Someone was once asked after his team was slapped around..."Coach, how about your team's execution?" He suggested that a firing squad at dawn would be appropriate.
We've all felt that way...
JMHO.

Yes, I get that point of view, but where I think it bothers me is that it wasn't prompted. This wasn't a coach being interviewed and questioned about his team. This was a coach co-hosting a local prep roundup (basically giving scores and updates from throughout the area and state as well as chatting with guests). He wasn't asked about his team, he just volunteered the comment.

Even if that position coach was a very successful HC in his own right. If you agree to be an assistant again late in your career, you agree to conduct yourself like an assistant, too. That means you don't speak publicly for your team.

No problem with someone having a sense of humor. It's a game. Sometimes ya gotta laugh. Not like it's a secret that his team got beat badly and obviously it wasn't a good game to watch.
