Wondering if anybody has heard an excuse for quitting that we may find entertaining. Not something generic, like the kid that quit in-season to focus on school work then, the very next day, was working out with the track team. We're looking for really weird. Here's mine:
Quitting football to get into semi-pro cage fighting.

Had a kid quit because his dog was going to have puppies and he wanted time to play with them.

Didn't have a quit as much as he was removed. Removed because he was sent to jail for pulling a knife in a fight. Funny how things work when you're 18 and stupid.

Not over quitting, but the knife and jail thing brought this up.
Just this past week in a junior high game, a stud D-lineman was wearing us out. Coach tells the Center to cut him. Center looks at coach serious as a heart attack and says, "But Coach, I don't have a knife."
Might be a clue we should work on cutting a bit more.

Coached Varsity girls basketball at my last school. Had 17 girls start out and eventually trimmed down to 11. Some just stopped showing up, others said they werent into it, you know whatever.
One day had an IEP meeting with one of the girls who quit. I teach English. Before the meeting a few people were sitting around and someone says "Suzie (not real name) how is basketball going?"
Suzie said she isnt playing anymore. The school psychologist chimes in: "Yeah Suzie and I decided together that it wasn't the right fit for her. Coach was a real jerk and picked on her."
I said "yeah that guy...something else isnt he?" as I looked right at Suzie.
Psych lady: "He was a real jerk making her run that much."
Me: "Doesnt seem to bother the other 11 girls still on the team."
Psych: How do you know the exact number?
Me: I'm the coach.
Psych lady looks at Suzie...and Suzie puts head down and we start the IEP.

Had a kid quit one year so he could get prepared to play college football. Was a sophomore, who could have helped us a little but wasn't to be a starter. His dad told him he would be better of just working out.

Had one quit because he was a WR and thought he'd get his finger jammed and it would effect his bowling

We had one kid come out to our Frosh workouts, he's there all summer. He's not particularly good, or noticeable. Well, we issue him gear, he comes to one practice and then stops coming for the next two weeks. His mom calls and wants to return his gear. That's fine. Little did we know that he had decided to play pop warner as an Older-Lighter telling all the kids in his grade that he had college scouts coming to watch him. Anyways the pop warner practices on our field after our practice so all of our kids see him in practice, he's playing RB and we watch a few plays, he's terrible (not being rude not trying to attack this kid, he is just quite literally terrible) anyways the entire team stayed and watched him practice and after every play you would hear this roar of laughter from our sideline.

Kid comes up to the staff and says coaches im honna have to quit, we ask why and his response was, “My ex girl friend had her baby and it was white...”
Kid was white, gf left him for another guy who was black. Kid quit because he had to go be a dad- which is commendable- although he came back in a couple weeks.

Heard this story from years ago. Senior kid comes up to coach after getting "dinged". (Concussion today.) Had been out for football for 4 years but never played much. Just liked being part of the team. Anyways, he went to head coach to announce he was quitting. "Coach, I like you, I like football, and I like your program, but I'm just too smart to ruin my brain in this sport" Kid goes to college, becomes a Rhodes scholar and then a renown physician. Later becomes a prominent politician so I guess he knew of which he spoke.

A kid quit because the Fortnite (video game) group that he played with went on during practice and he felt like he was missing out.

Some I've heard.....
Im going into UFC. (Kid didn't play football or wrestle either. Isn't cage fighting yet)
I'm homesick. (Kid lived two blocks from school)
Kid who played baseball said he was allergic to grass after two a days
Kid quit who wanted to become a coach. Football wasn't "fun" anymore.
Kid wanted more time to watch girls volleyball team
"Football wasn't what I was looking for". I asked what he wanted. He responded "I'm not sure"

Had a kid quit to focus on his BMX racing training.
Had a senior send a freshman with his equipment to tell me he had quit. When I tracked the kid down he told me he needed to focus on getting ready for basketball season. He didn’t make the team.
Had a freshman tell me he was going to take the year off and train so he was better for next season.
Had an incoming 8th grader quit before the season because he missed his little league coaches and wished HS was more like little league.

Had a kid quit to work, I was like fine go work. HE showed up every day to coach JV and said he was working on becoming a coach. I said we can't have quitters coaching the kids. He said fine, showed up every day before practice to give tips to JV lineman.
This kid was a senior voted captain, for his work in the spring and as a junior. When I finally sat down with him he said he was too good too play and needed to impart his knowledge on the next generation (his words). Anyways kid never graduated hit the bong pretty hard. Now he shows up to every game face painted. Weird dude.

The thing I love most about this exchange is that the kid didn't express any moral objection to cutting the other player with a knife, but instead just stated that he didn't have the necessary tool lol.

I have had several WR's say they were quitting because they weren't targeted enough in the pass game...bet they catch way more passes playing Fortnite.

At a rural small school I used to coach at I had a kid who seemed to like football quit unexpectedly. Called his mother she says he quit to buy his girlfriend braces. The only thing I could says "what". Never came back.

There was this 9th grader, short chubby guy who wasn't very good. We're like 2 or 3 weeks into practice by now. He started breaking down crying in the middle of Indy drills one day. I send the other guys off for a quick water break and check on him. I say "dude what's wrong?" He responds "I just want just want to hit somebody coach, and I can't do that because of the position you got me playing."
Umm..... He was a left guard on offense and nose tackle on defense. I literally couldn't finish the conversation. He finished practice and I never saw him again.

“I want to spend more time with my girlfriend.” —Our starting QB.
Then she leaves him for the new starting QB within a week.
I’ve also had a few quit so they could attend Wednesday church services, which didn’t start until an hour after practice anyway.
EDIT: I forgot about 2 of my other favorites:
1. Had more than 1 kid quit because their parents promised to buy them a 4 wheeler if they’d quit football. Football was “just too dangerous” but 4 wheeling without a helmet just a few feet from a busy interstate was safer, apparently.
2. “You’re not featuring my talents as a playmaker,” said by the 3rd string WR who was 140lbs soaking wet and ran a blazing 5.2 with hands like rocks.

I’m sorry. That’s awful, but happens all the time, unfortunately. I know a woman whose 4 year old son died in a 4 wheeler accident and I personally saw someone killed in a 4 wheeler wreck when they ran out in front of a truck on the interstate. There’s no way in hell I’ll ever let my kids near one. But up there... football was considered far more dangerous by a lot of parents because of CTE and injuries and the moderately successful basketball coach constantly telling kids and parents how dangerous football was. This was the same place where a kid’s mom stood up in church on Sunday and praised Jesus for ending her son’s football career due to multiple concussions.
