we throw one of the middle, catch it and its a break away, at about the 7 yd line, the defender trailing, slide tackle like futbol, trips us. here comes the flag, then they waive it off and tell us, your allowed to trip anyone WITH THE BALL, just not a non ball carrier.
been coaching 25 years and never, ever seen or heard of such a thing. the rule is as vague as possible too. illegal blocking says a player shall not trip an opponent who is not a runner.
then illegal personal contact says no player shall strike and opponent with his fist, locked hands, forearm or elbos, nor kick or knee him.
so if your a blocker/defender, you may not trip your opponent as long as you dont have the ball. if you have the ball, the defense can legally kick your feet and trip you or is it a personal foul....
this is an awful rule.

A defender is allowed to trip the ball carrier.

i just dont know how that is in the best interests of safety! easily blow a knee out if the kid is planted and cutting off the leg you trip

without a doubt fantomi just dont see how that the federation can allow it in terms of safety. im not a hawk tackle guy or a concussion, lay of the qb, guy, but this is not anywhere near safe. a full speed runner and you kick his legs out from under him. because you couldnt tackle him, you trip him. doesnt make much sense.

Rules makers probably never considered a play like the one you described. I've been involved in the game for 50 years and I've never seen it. Never even seen it on TV.

Had it happen a few years ago and the ref explained that the soccer "slide tackle" was perfectly legal on the ball carrier

if I knew how to put a hudl video clip up here, i would show you. was the damdest thing ive ever seen.
ref threw the flag and we were all like, well thats on the 3, whats the play call, as i am going to the goal line portion of the sheet, gonna give it to the kid that just got tripped up, get him his TD. they waive it off and were at the 7. was floored. wonder i didnt get a flag, was on the hash yelling at the ref

Is there any evidence that this is more dangerous than other legal ways of tackling?

Happened to a kid at my previous school. Coaches were outraged, kid got a penalty but we were told later it was a legal play. We had all the questions you everyone else did about safety. Lucky it didnt blow out a knee.

We aren't really going to complain that something that is done in soccer is too dangerous for football, are we?
