Today my captains came up to me and informed me that they broke the bench in the locker room. I asked them how it happened and they said, “Well, the varsity linemen sat down to get dressed and it snapped.”
I’m not even mad. I just told them in the future maybe they disperse the weight around the locker room a little better.

My starting right guard is 162 pounds- he doesn't break anything...except wind.

How do you use a light linemen like that? Especially when they can face a defender that could be heavier between 20 to 50 lbs? I might have to think about that possibility

I might have to think about that possibility I'll take a little guy who is powerful, strong and understands leverage over a big sexy every time. My kid (junior) is about 200lbs. Friday night, we played the #1 ranked team in the state (smallest division) and beat them. My son (OG) gave up at least 50lbs to the kid across from him but still whipped his a$$. Of course, my kid also squats 500lbs, benches 315lbs, has a 29" VJ, and is a sectional qualifier in wrestling.

Yeah, but I will take the big sexy who is powerful, strong, and understands leverage of the little engine that could Victor on a more serious note, the key is to recognize that it is about time and space. You are trying to block a certain space, at a certain time so that the defender can't make the play. Now it is great when you have John Hannah and you can block that space before that time, during the time after the time and generally just maul the defense. But when you can't just maul, you have to coordinate the timing of the blocks and not ask the OL to do things they physically can't do. A good example is the buck sweep. Not necessarily asking the guards to crush anyone but just kind of shield the defense.

I might have to think about that possibility The kid was 160 as a 7th grader found a spot and hasn't given it up...we have had 3 OL hurt this fall (and another not come out)and he likely wouldn't have been a guard when camp opened (we had planned to move him to TE). He is designated puller and he flops back and forth based on the play..and some times just for the fun of it. The other guard is a soph. that is still learning the game.
Against a couple of kids who are FCS commits it got a bit ugly...
I don't think he has given up less than a 40 pounds- the FCS kids were both 270.

I love this kid already. I do too but I'd rather have the FCS kid.

I love this kid already. As an added bonus his family raises sweet corn and delivers it to the coaches...every once in a while you forget how lucky you are to coach.

I might have to think about that possibility I, personally, LOVE small, athletic, aggressive offensive lineman. When coached up well, they're quick off of the snap, they have generally have great leverage as they're shorter than the big SOBs across from them and they're excellent pullers. They will struggle to pass protect at times as they don't have the wing-span to keep the DL off of them.

My man had three pancakes last Friday- 2 were on blitzing LB's that he absolutely lifted and destroyed. The third one he got some help because they stunted into his pull and the kid was already off balance.
