Y'all have any tricks for cramps? We condition very hard, but it's extremely hot where we are.

Kids should be hydrating like crazy, all day long. All of our guys carry around a gallon jug of water at school and pull on it throughout the day. Then we water them well during practice.

Obviously proper hydration is key, but as far as stopping a cramp once its started, mustard is the best thing I have found.

Plain potato chips have more sodium and potassium than Gatorade or Powerade. Trade the sugar for some fat. The best thing is to hydrate like crazy before practice.

Mustard helps when they feel they may start to cramp. At night if they will eat a handful of cashews or drink some tonic water that will help from cramping at night. Drink a couple of big glasses of water when they get up in the morning. Keep drinking water through the day till their pee is light in color.

Salt and electrolytes might be more important than hydration. Or as important.

Very few ever get to that point, but that is the target. In a perfect world they would drink until their pee is pale yellow.

Okay...I saw an ad for this. www.crampsaway.com/Our athletic trainer tried it after I showed the ad to him. Our trainer is good...been around awhile. Worked a few Olympics, etc. He ABSOLUTELY SWEARS BY THIS STUFF. Everyone he gives it to the cramps go away almost instantly. Every time I ask him about it his eyes light up and he finishes my sentence..."best thing ever". Worth a shot.

We have our kids take two salt tablets before and two salt tablets after each practice. So, during two-a-days they're getting a total of eight. Then, they took two before going to bed for a daily total of ten. This allows us to limit their water intake at practice so that we're not wasting a lot of time with water breaks and stuff like that.

Shots of vinegar also work. You'll also find out who's good at taking shots.

Pickle juice and Pedialyte We had a kid in our program who really struggled with cramps, even later in the season when the weather wasn't so hot. During his senior year, he added Pedialyte IN ADDITION TO the amount of water he was already drinking and didn't have one all season long. Not sure how much Pedialyte he was drinking though.

There is one school that we play that the field is literally right by the river. We played a game with 181 plays and had no cramps. The next week we played at the river school and had 4 kids cramping at beginning if the 3rd quarter. Tried Cramps Away, helped, but two of the kids kept cramping.

Enough potassium & magnesium. Trouble with getting potassium is they've limited the non-prescription products to such a low dose it'd be more convenient to eat bananas or drink orange juice.
As to magnesium, it needs to be a well-absorbed kind or it'll just produce diarrhea, actually depleting the body of magnesium. For instance, magnesium oxide tablets may be labeled as a dietary supplement, but really all they're good for is antacid & laxative. Best absorbed magnesiums come as glycinate, orotate, aspartate; lactate & citrate are pretty good.

Was watching film of an opponent about 10 years ago and saw a kid eating chips on the sideline in the middle of a tough game. Spent the week telling my kids that we needed to put a beating on this kid for being so cocky and stuff about how we have to be tougher than a team whose coaches allow that bullchit, etc. Haha. Found out he had some sort of condition, can't remember if it was just very extreme cramping or something else, but it was basically doctor's orders to be eating these chips during the game.

This past Friday we were playing in the heat. Our JV middle linebacker was cramping so he started pounding pickle juice. On his first play back in they ran a dive and he was there to meet the ball, just flatbacked the runner. And then promptly vomited pickle juice right into his face. It's moments like those that make me enjoy coaching JV football.

Dilute water with Gatorade or Pedialyte. Many water breaks. Keep bananas for the players.

I see a lot of people suggesting bananas on this thread, which is good. But don't forget about sodium and calcium. You need all three for proper muscle function.
