I'm having a hard time figuring out why they can't get a qualified HC. What is it about your school that keeps assistants at other schools from being willing to take the job? Non-teaching coaches are pretty common in a lot of areas. $5000 isn't great money but it's not the worst that I've ever heard of either. It seems as though there must be a young eager beaver assistant somewhere who would like to punch his HC ticket. Is there something that we need to know about the school?

Even mediocre programs around here will get a handful of applicants, most of which are somewhat qualified. Our vacant HC position had over 30 applicants last year. If anyone is ever wondering how a program can win only 5 games in 10 years, this is it. Can't get qualified coaches. The culture is that bad.

RedCoach... I am really very sorry about the many stupid responses that you got on The Old Coach site. That site used to be a place to go and discuss football, but not anymore. The site has been hijacked by knuckleheads! I love the way in which you have sought advice regarding your situation. Sounds like you are facing an uphill battle but it can be done! I once took over a program that sounds a LOT like yours. We started with only 13 kids in the entire HS program and eventually got things turned around. Hang in there! Again, sorry about the poor response you received on the other site. Not everyone from Texas is a moron! Good luck!

- Well we are the smallest school in our area. - All the other schools have newer buildings. - People from other schools keep do keep spreading the same old rumor that we are shutting down. (But we aren't) - Well the last real coach we had now coaches at another school in our county, so I don't know if he talks bad about the school or not. - All the other schools around here has a lot higher numbers, They have more kids on their varsity teams then we do across all four grades. - We did have one grade school coach apply and then changed his mind and moved up to assistant coach at the middle school where he was. - We do have open arollment, and people claim that the best athletes go to the other schools after 8th grade so that they can play for a better team. I do know of a few kids who have done this but I really don't know for sure how many has done it. But then again I have grade school kids and don't keep up on every kid in the high school.
So to be honest I really don't know, your guess is as good as mine. If I had to guess maybe people around here looks at us as an old little farm school that doesn't have enough kids for a team and the school could be closing. Which just isn't the case, but is the only thing I can think of.
I don't have a kid on the team and wont have for 4 years from now. So I really don't have anything in it other then I care about our school and the kids.

Thanks huddlehut I don't think everyone is like that on that website, its just that most of them that posted didn't have any thing good to say let alone helpful.
I just really feel bad for our program and I'm just sick of sitting around hoping and wishing the right coach will come along. I'm dang its been 8 years.
If I was to take this job I really don't think that I'm going to be some big time coach or anything. But dang I would love to get it so we could at least get on the scoreboard in most games. As it stands not 50% of our games we don't even score. I would just like to see some kind of improvement, something to say wow we are making some progress.

That's how you have to begin...by setting small goals, breaking a single game down into smaller pieces - a quarter, a drive, etc. The kids also have to have fun (which is tough when your not winning. Winning makes everything fun). Most of the time a guy in your situation has to work harder and smarter than a coach who is enjoying deep playoff runs. Increase participation by treating kids with respect and a positive outlook throughout the season. Do everything you can to play sub-varsity games, even if you have to play with eleven players. Your thoughts about a lunchtime video and all are good. Create and maintain a website and post pictures (this attracts visitors). Paint your logo at midfield. Outline the numbers on the field in your school colors. T-shirts, decals on cars, signs in players yards, etc are good, too! Sure, some will say "just focus on the football!" but in your situation you just cannot do that! You have to also create enthusiasm, etc... Create a football Hall of Fame at your school (even if you haven't had any success - you are only looking at former players from your school). Again, the guys that are perennially successful will get all of the acclaim, however, you will probably outwork them!

redcoach,
What area of what state are you in? You don't have to be too specific if you don't want. I am curious, however.

Haha! Dear God, no! I'm a youth coach in Texas. I'm definitely not qualified to take over a HS program. If you do decide to take that job, I for one, would like for you to keep us (me) posted. One way or the other, I'd pull the trigger on the decision sooner than later. It sounds like there is a whole lot to be done between now and the upcoming season.
I wish you luck with it all, either way you go.

nice. 19 high schools, with #20 being built for next fall right now, where I live. 3 turf fields in county right now. the goal (from what I have heard) is that all 20 schools will get turf. 1 at a time, starting with the fields that are in worst shape and spend the most money on field maintenence up to the 17th that is pristine-being last. that field, is like agusta national. it doesnt need turf! wish I didnt have to spend 3-10 hrs a week doing that stuff. There isn't a parent group or booster club that could help take the burden off of you and your staff? I'm in Illinois and we are lucky to have someone who is excellent at getting our fields ready to go. He lines both practice and game fields. But, I have been in other programs where the parents did the lining of the fields. i coached in another state and had a group of parents that did the gamefield lining weekly. it was great. where I am at now. we have a coach from another sport that does the gamefield. which is great. hes a former fb coach, but took time off for his young boys. when they get to pop warner levels, he will start coaching again. the AD mows for us and we line practice field. where I was at as head coach the last 4 years, boosters were a joke. parents barely came to games(not all of them, some were super committed). i did it all. to be completely honest, was more afraid anyone else would screw it up and i would have to fix it, so why not do it right or my way the first time. lol
