Most of us are about 10 days in now. So how's it going? We have 24 kids, only 1 "bad" day of practice. We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last fall at this time. Hopefully we can keep progressing forward.

We're still in our 5 day mandatory heat acclimatization. Even though we had 3 work outs a night all of July in shells these 5 days will make all the difference... No full contact till next week and with a move to 6 classes our state has only given us one week of pads and one scrimmage instead of two like every other year before our first game.

Lost our top athlete, one of our top leaders, our best QB is missing 3 of the first 4 days, and our best RB is marooned in Mexico through the weekend.
That said, thank God it's football season.

Chit Sandwich...
We looked like a real triple option team on offense with the backside of our OL scooping the {censored} out of the defense, FBs bending off their DL & LB action keys, and most importantly, QBs making great reads & getting tons of leverage pitches!
Missing about 5 guys, 3 of which should be starters, but won't be in week 1 (and 2 of them would be lockdown starters on the DL).
I'm coaching line reading LBs for the 1st time & so far they are catching on, pull their triggers fast off the 1st key in their triangles, just need to keep getting reps so they play off the rest of their & especially backfield flow to fit the ballcarrier better.

We are in Day 3. After looking good all summer, I thought day 1 absolutely sucked. Receivers having brain farts on chit that we have been repping since June. QBs forcing bad throws when they know better, in addition to throwing out all of the mechanics we have been working on. Defense looked good though, but I think only because we made them.
Day 2 was much better. I calmed the F down and coached instead of losing my chit. Kids responded to positive coaching, and the offense improved.
Day 3: We go at 5:00 tonight, so we'll see.

We officially start tomorrow. We had a complete make over this past off season. Other than me our previous staff was together for over 20 years. This is my 10th year here. This year we have a brand new staff. I'm the only hold over. We've had tons of energy in the weight room and summer practices. So far I'd definitely say the kids have bought in. I expect a very good year for us compared to the last few years. Hopefully I check back in in a few weeks with the same attitide.

Excited. HC of a middle school and our first regular season game is tomorrow. Got a heck of a staff this year (50+ years combined between 4 guys), an extremely athletic/fast QB with an arm, and we can go two-deep at every position on defense. In our jamboree we beat another county team that we haven't beaten in any capacity since 2000. Only thing I am worried about is our conditioning and our receivers catching the ball. Still, I am ready. To. Go.

Day 9. Jamboree on Friday.
I'll know after that if we're winning double digits or not.

Our district went with 10 and 1. PIAA sucks. This re-alignment is worse than before.

Our district let us decide on our own what we could do, we got screwed because everyone had a game in place for that second week, we got stuck with a scrimmage. The new classification for us was the best thing that could happen, it got us away from the big boys in district What district

We have been at it since last monday. First scrimmage was last night. Thought we gained some confidence and played better as it went. We have to get more physical up front and block and tackle better to have a chance to be better than 500

We are one day 9 and I think we have had some good practices. Currently dressing around 98 kids but we actually are thin at quite a few positions as far as true talent depth is concerned. Our starting RB was in limited contact this week after a shoulder injury but should be full speed next week. We have our annual senior meeting this evening with our annual scrimmage tomorrow night. I'm jacked up about this season. This year's seniors were sophomores a couple of years ago when we won the state championship but the thing about them is many of them played significant downs and some (QB, CB, MLB, RG, WR) even started for us that year so they are a very mature and experienced bunch. They know what the expectations are for their group but the big question is, with the toughest schedule we've had in years, will they be able to live up to those expectations. Last year's seniors were not a great group which led us to a 9-2 record which was the worst season here in 20 years. But this group is special, they just have that "it" feeling to them.

IF we stay HEALTHY and we keep improving, we will be really good. And we have only two seniors, both who are good/fine, but could get beat out. We will have a chance this year and could be the favorite next year.
And I have two d1 baseball players who started last year that aren't playing this year. One committed to Bama yesterday and the other has tons of options just hasn't committed yet. They might just come back out next year.

We are only 6 days in and I am at a new school but I can say I am impressed with the exception of in shape our kids are. Big and physical line, strong and fast RBs, so so WR's. Defense plays smart and fast. It also doesn't hurt that we have some depth in key positions.
Open up with a top 10 team in our class and a Top 10 team in a class larger than ours. We will find our real quick how good we will be. Overall, pretty decent team but we are relying on 16, 17, and 18 year old's so you never know what could happen.

I am feeling blessed. Got my 1st HC job on a team that is 0-22 at the moment. Got 19 guys to show up 23 days for summer weights (small class). 25 guys out to play, so the rest will make-up their missing days by this week. Biggest problem on tape from last year was an overwhelming lack of agggression. So, to help expedite the issue, we do OK drills for an 8 min set on Friday, and about 10 of them have turned into animals. That is a complete 180 from our camp to start the summer. They are starting to execute blocking schemes they struggled with in camp (they were spread-only inside zone- last year and we are smash mouth-gap scheme- this year). Who knows if we will keep progressing, but I am overjoyed with their attitude and progress to date.

Even if they don't progress further right now, it sounds like they are drastically better than when you came in and that you have something to build on each year that you're there. I love that you have changed the scheme. I am in inside zone spread guy, but think it's tough to sell to an 0-22 program that has already been losing running that. I also don't think that I am smarter or a better coach necessarily than other spread inside zone guys, so to me it's like trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Good luck!

I still feel like it's a tough sell on players and a community of they were 0-22. Luckily for me, if I ever do get the HC nod I am equally proficient in the flexbone and Pro I style offenses. I'm still at a point where if a school is talking to me, it probably isn't a great program. Bringing in a new system along with culture will go a long way.

See if anyone can top this first week of camp, we had our first scrimmage today, which was good. Before camp started senior MLB step wrong during pass scrimmage, and had to about 4 cm piece of cartlidge removed from his knee, can't even walk on it until september. Then camp comes around, our 4th CB rolls ankle by stepping in a rut on our practice field, our starting DE/RT gets rolled up on and missed almost all of camp with a contusion, my jv center broke his leg, at our scrimmage today our starting RB/SS went with at minimum an AC joint sprain, so the back up who went in for him broke his collar bone on the last play of the scrimmage, and our other starting SS has been out since Wednesday with some type of shoulder injury, by the way we started the season with 37 players

In our first scrimmage last week we looked like crap. This week we looked a lot better, especially our soph QB who we'd expected to be our starting TE until our expected QB moved. He's a coach's dream: Honor student, tough (wrestler), fast, and lifts with our strongest group.
The bad news: Our vest defensive player broke his elbow.

Scrimmage was ok. A lot of technique things to fix especially the DL actually playing BDSD...as the DC I've been focused much more on our LBs this year, especially since the LB coach had a family vacation & my DL coach can only make 2 or 3 practices a week due to work. At least we are much more athletic up front & actually are not that far behind last year as we also had some technique issues after that scrimmage.
Now time to prep for 1 of the better Class C / Division 6 or 7 teams in the state of Michigan. They looked great in their scrimmage although it was against some extremely lousy defense, are well coached & have some real speed at multiple positions. We shut down their base plays of IV & Midline last year, but struggled some against perimeter fits on Rocket & a Bubble off IV. Perimeter has been a focus all year...hopefully that pays off some today.
