So our state just signed a contract making Spalding the official football, we used to have to use Rawlings. We re required to use it in all postseason games. There was a survey done of the coaches in the state concerning which ball they would want. Majority wanted Wilson and then Nike. I am not sure Spalding got one vote, didn't even know they made a football. Does anyone have any experience with the Spalding Alpha football?

Yes it's the closest thing to Wilson that you'll find. Southern Cal has been having to use Spalding for years and people are much more pleased w the alpha

The Rawlings balls we had to use last year were awful.
I'm not familiar with Spalding at all. But, it's really obvious why the state went with Spalding over Rawlings.

The Alpha is close to the GST in terms of touch and feel. I'm interested in trying it.

We started using the Alpha last year. Our QBs liked them a lot. Closest thing to the GST.

How many states mandate a specific football?

How many states mandate a specific football? It's mandated for the playoffs. So most teams just go a head and use it through the season.

Florida has been a Spalding state the past 5 years so we have used them. They switched to Wilson this year so we did also but we never had a problem with the Spaldings. I believe the Alpha came out last year.

The MSHSL (Minnesota) mandates a Spalding ball be used starting in the quarterfinals. During the regular season and up to that point you can use whatever brand you want to use. We have been this way since 2013.

We have been this way since 2013. Do many schools opt for a different ball before that? I know how mental some kids can get with that stuff.

In my section of NorCal we must use Rawlings in playoffs...
The ST5 is horrible - fat and crappy...
Any other good Rawlings balls?
Love the GST...

We have been this way since 2013. Do many schools opt for a different ball before that? I know how mental some kids can get with that stuff. In 2013 we started the season using the Spalding J5V ball and it sucked. It lost it's shape and we went back to using the GST the last 4-5 games. A lot of teams did. By the time the playoffs rolled around the state sent out a memo telling teams they could use whatever ball they wanted while Spalding fixed the problem. I don't think anyone was left using the Spalding. Since then the state has gone back to it's Spalding mandate in the playoffs, and I know some teams really like the Alpha ball and use it all year. Other teams will use the GST until it is time to switch then they switch.

Yeah there's nothing to do with the survey and all to do with money It's a sponsorship deal In our section teams have to use Wilson footballs in playoffs Before that it was Rawlings (yeah the baseball company lol) Just depends on who gives them the most money and signs the contract Spalding makes great basketballs tho

I'm a lineman coach so I don't care much, however nothing feels better when I show off my arm than a Wilson GST. I can even throw an occasional spiral with it! Luckily us in Michigan have Wilson as our official ball of the state tournament from 2014-2019. It was Rawlings prior to that...
