We just finished up our first week of spring practice using our new 52" tackling rings from Gilman gear..
LOVE them.
Some things we used them for this week.
Defense - tackling drills (hawk tackle on moving target with high reps) Shed and angle tackle Lb coach used it for reaction (rolled to and they popped it back) during bag drills.
Offense - Used it on our toss drill for our FB to kick out a defender at various attack angles. Used it on Bubble for our Slot to gain leverage on a moving target reacting to bubble route. Rolled both across an area while working on our dig drill... created natural moving spaces for our guys to settle in. (based on the speed each coach/kid rolled the ring)
We could have used kids to do all of this... but... I really do not have time to teach a kid how to do all of these things in practice just to give us a look.
With shipping 2 of these cost me right at $900... worth every penny.

Largest I have seen so far is 42, but I haven't really researched that hard either.

just because of all the naysayers i am going to invent my own tackling ring company Kick start it! I'll back it. Just being a smart a$$. And what you will find is after you buy the materials and then pay someone to make it, and then pay their benefits, and then buy insurance and get business liscences, and then market it, and pay for advertising, and build a website, and hire an accounting person, and pay credit card fees, taxes, and shipping, and hire someone to be the secretary, and someone to be in sales, and then have to spend time doing all this and then have to fire someone and hire someone else, you hire a manager, who you have to manage the manager, you then realize to make any profit for yourself and make it worthwhile, you have to sell the 42" tackling ring for $299.

I will bow out of this thread and just agree to disagree. I'll test it myself and make a decision then. Thanks for all the concern and input fellas!

And to clarify I'm not talking monster truck tire But bigger than the tires on a civic Something In-between Having seen these at clinics and watched several training videos on them, I don't think a regular old tire would have the padding to protect the play over many reps, and I think it would also be much heavier. As for the coach who questioned whether this would lead to a lot of diving at a player's legs, that's all in how you coach it up; if you teach them to make contact with their shoulder first, then wrap, then roll, then no. If you let them dive at it and don't correct them, then yes. Inspect what you expect.

Any updates on these? Anyone have a size that they prefer? Thinking about getting 42 inch ones, but fear they might be too small. Any suggestions?

That is what I was thinking, now you might be able to take the stem out and use your spray foam there to make it harder but might change the roll. I'm assuming the duck tape is for the valve stem, that might be the only problem with it cutting up your arm.

The one I ordered and shared in post has a tiny stem and a rubber cap that screws over it so no stem issues for me yet

Lol... homemade tackling rings...
Nah, I just bit the bullet and bought official tackling rings... 4 for 1600 bucks. 52"... i hope my DC gets alot of use out of them... we got shadowman tacklers last year... liked the concept, but wasn't impressed with the design of the dummies. $2500 for a set if 3 was pretty steep for as little use as we got out of them.

Anyone just use a big tire instead of spending money on a ring ? I have heard of people buying the inner tube for a tractor tire and using that instead of the tackling ring. I have not seen anyone use an actual tire as a tackling ring.

We use them all the time. State association just changed the rule for off-season. Because of the safety concern on concussions we can now teach tackling year round. Before we could only use the agile dummies, lay flat on the ground. Now we can use the tackling wheels. However, you can't use the Shadowman.
We use the smallest, 26 I believe, to teach getting off of cut blocks. Use the larger ones for teaching "HawK" tackling.
