We are ordering some tackling rings. I've noticed there are several different sizes of the wheels. For you guys that have used them what size works the best. Thanks for your input.

I am also ordering some. I ordered 2 of each size, small, medium, and large. What are some of the drills we can use these for? Are the large ones too big for my 7th and 8th graders? Are the small ones too small for my 11th and 12th graders?

Search on YouTube for drills. There are some videos of college teams using them.
We don't have any but anything smaller then 42" seems too small. Some look too big. Somewhere in between 40-50" seems right but we haven't used them, so I can't say for sure.

Coaches after calling around I have been told that 42" is the most popular for high school. The coach who posted the drill tape on here awhile back also used 42 and they seemed to be the perfect size in his video.

Why not use a pop up tackle dummy?

Why not use a pop up tackle dummy? The tackling wheel moves and forces you to stay low for Hawk (rugby) tackling.

Ok Well why not just use a blocking dummy like on the hawk videos

I saw the wheels at a clinic, but they didn't look to me like they could roll very easy. Is that the point?
How about a shadow man tackling dummy then?

Ok I clicked the link, those aren't like the ones I saw, the ones I saw I'm pretty sure looked more like lug nuts.

I am going to get a few. I have decided to get a couple of different sizes. My theory is that the smaller ones may be a little harder to get into great position on, and also may roll a little faster and be a harder moving target......which would require more focus and accuracy on the part of the tackler.

Any suggestions on what size to use for youth football?

Maybe I am not seeing the full picture, but one aspect of these that I don't like is that it turns into a lot of diving and removes the leg/ foot drive from the tackle. I feel like we are teaching kids to dive instead of maintain feet in the ground and drive the legs through the tackle.

I can't speak for other coaches, but this will be just one tool in our toolbox to improve tackling. We will still do our other circuits but I feel this will help with open field tackling on a moving target. We will not change our coaching points of running through the tackle, etc.

Anyone just use a big tire instead of spending money on a ring ? Some schools may not have an adequate place to store them depending on the mass of the tire

Anyone just use a big tire instead of spending money on a ring ? Some schools may not have an adequate place to store them depending on the mass of the tire It's a freaking tire... You don't need to store it, you just leave it on the ground Roll it behind a building, under the bleachers, in grass... I'm having a hard time thinking of places I couldn't store it I could literally throw it in the pool if I had a rope on it And then pull it up out of the water the next day, and it'd still be fine

Just my opinion, but I don't think a tire is "solid" enough from what I have seen on the videos of someone using the tackling rings.

Back to my question....What size do you guys suggest for youth football. Say 2nd grade to 5th grade type kids. We're going with the 42" for our HS kids and a size smaller for middle school but I'm wondering what size of the small ones to get.
Thanks
