I'm 23, still in school until next December. Plan to land a coaching job somewhere in the greater Houston area. Any young coaches/students from the Houston/Beaumont area?

thurman,
Sounds like you and I have nearly identical careers. I just turned 30 and going into my 13th season. I also coached youth ball for 3 years. Have been varsity OC for 8 years.

I didnt want to play college ball out of high school.. Was too lazy, plus I had been the victim of some bad back problems.. So the Fall after I graduated I went and signed up to coach at the local Parks and Rec Dept.. There wasnt enough teams so they paired me up with a guy who had a son on the team.. He ended up calling me within two days of the first time I met him telling me he wasnt going to have the time to coach.. So I ended up doing it myself.. I had a few friends that helped me as assistant coaches, but two were still in high school and the other just kind of helped out..
Talk about a rough situation.. A white 18 year old trying to earn the respect of a bunch of 11 and 12 year old black kids.. But, I led and they followed.. We went 10-0 and won the city championship.. We scored 280 points and only allowed 6.. Of course I thought I knew everything.. I just realized a few years back that I actually knew nothing..
And in a few years from now I hope to realize that I know nothing now... Because that would mean I actually have learned something between now and then.. which is the only way to be a better coach..

I'm a 22 year old grad student working on my masters in education. I played two years of college ball at a IAA school before a back injury cut my playing days short. I always knew I wanted to teach and coach but wasn't able to until this past fall. I had a great time and learned a lot coaching wr's and db's. I am more excited for the upcoming season than I ever was as a player and that says a lot considering how much I loved to play.
Unfortunately, because of student teaching I have to leave the program I was at in the fall because I have to relocate. I am in the process of finding a staff to be a part of this fall...not a fun process by the way.

27 ---Will turn 28 in two weeks. I have been coaching for 7 years and the OC at my high school for the past 3 years (under two different head coaches). I truly love to coach and Lord willing, I will continue to coach for a long time.

I'm 24, spent two years at UW-River Falls then chased a girl to Europe... the girl didnt work out but it was how I got into coaching...
I'm in my 5th season of coaching, and have had the opporunity to coach in 3 different countries at all different levels. Though there have been some very tough and frustrating times in the last 5 years, I wouldnt trade it for anything because I have found my calling!

I'm 26 and in my 3rd year of high school coaching. Played four years at a Div. 3 college and spent another year there as a graduate assistant and finishing my Masters degree. Right now I'm the freshman OC/OL/DL coach(10-0 and 35 pts/game) and head powerlifting at a successful 4A school in Texas. Still looking for my first varsity job.
