The curse hit us hard this year. Some how the training room became the cool place to be and literally half our team was in the training room receiving "treatment" prior to every practice and it was so bad we had to move the start of practice back just to get everyone on the field. It started with one or two older players and trickled down to the younger kids. It was so cool to need ice after practice.
We literally had kids with rolled ankles and hip flexor strains that got treatment for 12+ weeks and never got any better.
These kids never got out of anything in terms of conditioning or taking reps in practice it was just prolonging practice.
Anyone experience the same this year or have a "PC" way of making the training room not cool???

Ice Bucket or full body Ice bath, every single day. Those debilitating bruises suddenly become bearable in practice.

Our female ATC is absolutely brutal- she will call them essentially big babies about minor stuff- she's a tough chick and former college athlete herself. Her approach has kept us (the coaches) from having to have that conversation. She is really good about evaluating and differentiating between "hurt" and "injured" athletes.

Yeah sounds like you have a soft trainer if that is going on. Nothing can kill a team quicker than a bad trainer.

We had a trainer who would actually enjoy it when the boys would gather around her. She ruined a few of our kids by coddling them and constantly fighting for their attention. She is a whale.

Sadly, There will always be about 6-10% of your roster that use the trainer as a mommy. The trick is making sure its not the 8-10% you need to help you win. Let the Cake eaters distract the trainer so you can have practice.

Ours is awesome she yells at the opposing soccer coaches if their players are flopping and she has to come out to check on them, tells the kids they are acting like "wussies" if they complain about little injuries, etc. As far as keeping them out of there, maybe you come up with some sort of rehab that they are required to do after practice to "get them healthy" enough to practice.
We've also pulled kids out of a few series throughout the course of a game and let them know before hand that it was going to happen in the name of letting their minor injuries get more rest. It usually takes care of itself fairly quickly. If a kid has what we feel is a legit injury and needs the treatment and is making every effort to be ready to practice we wouldn't do that, just to the ones that we think are milking it for whatever reason.

Probably a combo of all of the above! Like the full body ice bath everyday, might have to try that out next year.

Best trainers we ever had weren't the ones that chided the kids; kids today don't have a problem with being label a pooshy.
They treated the kids for their injuries, then the trainers worked their arse off on the side lines.
You got a bad ankle? Then you need to do 500 push-ups and 500 sit-ups, then get back with us for what to do next.
You got a bad shoulder? Then you can do squat thrusts for 20 minutes then runs some 110's

We had a college student interning with our trainer this year. 21 year old blonde girl... she killed our practice. I'd prefer male interns... much less distractions with them.

Nobody likes our trainer, so we didn't have much of a problem. Guy is just such a di@#, always yelling and acting like he is in charge. Kids have no respect for him, and sadly he doesn't see that.

Had a couple of starters miss a significant amount of practice due to getting "treatment" for various "injuries." HC sat them. They got bent out of shape about not suiting up on game day. We still won without them. They didn't miss practice again.

I always love it when a player is too hurt to practice during the week from the previous game and then Dr Friday shows up and they are miraculously healed.

I always love it when a player is too hurt to practice during the week from the previous game and then Dr Friday shows up and they are miraculously healed. We had a rule that if you couldn't practice Wednesday, you didn't suit up Friday. We told them it was for their own good because if they were too hurt on Wednesday they wouldn't be healed in time to play on Friday. Making it a safety issue kept the parents off our back, and most kids "healed" by Wed.

We had the same problem last year, tried a couple of things that made it better. First we set a practice start time. Those kids that wanted to get pre practice treatment had to get over to the locker room, get dressed, and get in the training room asap or they wouldn't get to warm up on time. If they were late, they were treated as being late to practic just like anyone else and received consequences. We also had kids come up earlier than everyone else on Saturday mornings for treatment (this was actually our trainers schedule). We just made sure if you're getting treatment during the week, you should be coming then. Last, and I got this from Coach Glass at Oklahoma State, our goal was to work injured kids that can't practice so hard that they want to get back to practice. We just came up with stuff for them to do that was within their injured ability. If they could jog, do abs, whatever they were getting after it. If they couldn't do anything physical then they would help the water girls, made it a "be part of getting team" thing. Basically put kids in a spot where they weren't just wearing the jersey. We still had our share of Jersey wearers but it seemed to help some.

Our trainer is an ex marine....this guy doesn't play. We ice bath every kid that goes to him, everyday. During practice, if you aren't practicing, you have "muscle beach" pushups, situps, running, ropes, etc...whatever they are able to do with their injury. Our kids hate going to see the trainer, and avoid it at all costs.
A terrible example being...not condoned at all...we had a kid play more than 5 games with a fractured wrist this year, simply because he said he would rather practice than go thru what the trainer would have put him thru. Unfortunately, he is a much better baseball player than a FS, but he is gonna miss most of baseball season because he never went to see the trainer during the football season.

"You can't make the club in the tub."-spoken by me every time I walk by the training room.
Seriously, it can become a problem and especially when they come back from their "pediatrician" and they use big words like contusion and say they have torn ligaments. Fortunately for them I have a degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Athletic Training so I can interpret for them. Contusion means you have a freakin bruise. Torn ligaments means you have a sprain. Then I remind them that my son was born with a hole in his head and had brain surgery when he was less than a day old and has had two eye surgeries. I don't really care about your bruise.
"Its a tough game for tough people."-also said by me because I can be a jerk sometimes. Well actually alot of the time.
Ive found the best thing to do is just ignore them. Kids crave attention and thats one of the reasons why they like to get hurt. Move on without them and let them know that if they get hurt we won't all of a sudden play with 10 people.

Our strength coach basically does a rehab session with injured guys during practice, and puts special effort into those players who are critical to our game plan, but reserves a little time for guys that need a bit of a push. We had a decent but lazy OL whose "injury" was legitimate but overblown, and the appropriate therapy was basically riding the bike, so he had to ride the bike on the sidelines all practice, all training camp. After a couple days we started calling him Greg LeMond.

Our trainers are pretty good, one is a legit mean lady with chronic RBF who tells them to toughen up. The other is a little softer but isn't too bad. We have had kids actually hold themselves out and the trainer said she didn't hold them out. That's a major mind eff.

A little off topic but for those that want to curb the hangers on for the trainer....
My rule
If you have a: head injury/concussion = full gear minus helmet upper body injury = helmet and lowers lower body injury = helmet and uppers
It helps me identify what a kid can actually do in practice.

I don't think we would be allowed to have a kid in full pads minus help with a head injury. Our trainer would flip.

I love what a lot of you guys have said that you do with the full body ice baths, and other workouts on the sideline.
With that said, that was not our problem the season. Apparently the cool club this year was the concussion club. Which why not! You get to stand around with sunglasses on or toss the football around on the sideline (which every time it happens we immediately stop, but there's always a new one you have to stop the next day). That also extends into the school where they get extra time for homework, tests, etc. Trainer doesn't help at all with this, anytime a player is hit hard they have a concussion. I believe we had 10 this year, 3 which were legit. Funny that those 3 rehabbed quicker than the others. What do you guys do with concussed players?
