So heres my whacky idea... We are down to 22 kids for various reasons. To get a good look, we've kicked around the idea of letting one of our coaches put on a helmet and play Scout Safety and Scout RB. Anyone ever done this to get a much better look? I assume the first time coach lays out some kid its an issue and we are all going to get fired. I remember back in high school (the dark ages of the 90s) that two coaches dressed out in uppers and played OLB so we could get a look for our biggest game. Anyone ever done this?

I'm about to lose all credibility, I've done it. I wore a helmet to play scout team QB. Didn't wear the shoulder pads and stuff because they weren't supposed to hit me and I didn't want anyone thinking I was hitting them or vice versa. Say what you will, but I got tired of getting hit in the face with a helmet. There is a huge liability factor concerning guys playing Safety and RB though.

Have only seen it done where the coach is the QB. Anything else can get you in trouble I think.

i would have to think liability would be the number one reason not to. Far as we go is a coach plays scout team QB to throw the ball, no contact at all

Only time i've seen in done was when I was in high school. We had a RB coach who was a D-1 back about 4-5 years out of college. Offense ran a toss sweep right and he promply ran over a LB and 3 or 4 dbs on his way to a 75 yard touchdown.
Everyone else is right...lawsuit waiting to happen.

We've done it several times per year over several years. If we just don't have anybody to give us a remotely good look at QB or HB, we will get a coach to do it. We've never had any issues with it, and it frequently has been a huge help.
A few weeks ago we had 1 at QB and another at HB. Our kids know that you pull up on kill shots, but everything else is fair game.

We've had a couple graduates who played in college simulate lock down corners.

I do it all the time without pads on. And I play some defense if needed for the offense. I just tag off on the guys and if a lineman takes a good angle and cuts me off I stop and he keeps his feet moving until the play is over.
I'm not out there trying to impress anybody or try out for the NFL but when who you have out there are a bunch of slugs you have to take matters into your own hands.

I would stay away from anyone that isn't on the roster. Coaches, custodians, waterboy or ex players, if you aren't on the team, then you can't practice. I am sure there are even rules about practice players, not that I was part of a program that was sanctioned for such things the year before I came on staff.

The only time we have anyone fill in is for scout QB because our scout sucks. But the D doesn't hit the QB.

But I would NEVER put on pads. guaranteed the next day some parent would have a picture claiming I was laying out kids, and screaming child abuse...

Agree with the consensus here. I have an assistant coach who plays scout team QB for us (without pads) and that is all I would allow. Dressing out coaches in pads isn't a good idea.

back in the old days when I was a young buck first and second year teacher/coach, I suited up the last practice and practiced with the kids, after that I stopped, but then at another school I was at, we only had 17 out, so I kept a helmet and shoulder pad in my truck, I hauled the water coolers in my truck, if they needed someone to play a position I would do it, I wouldn't do that again with things the way they are now a days

We have a coach throw 7-7 or run scout qb to hand the ball off w/o pads on. Your an idiot if you suit up as coach and go out there hitting kids. No way is my job worth more than "getting a look" in practice.

A coach dress out for practice? Absolutely not. There's a difference between a coach playing scout team QB with no equipment, and dressing for contact (or potential contact). There's just too much potential liability where that is concerned. It's a risk management nightmare.

What kind of an as*hole would pad up and practice? We are grown men. Our time has long gone.

I opened my dumb a$$ mouth one year and told our boys that if we beat (said rival team) that I would dress up the next week and run Oklahoma. I was about 36 at the time.
I came out fully dressed and they didn't recognize me at first. Once they got a look at me, they started whooping it up, big time. My heart was beating faster than a jack rabbit.
We had a few D-1 athletes on that particular squad. The first rep, I held my own and I started talking a little Sh*t. The next rep, a kid who eventually played safety for Penn State, and another kid who ended up at Rutgers lined up. Needless to say, the backside of my jersey needed a bunch of Tide to get all the grass stains out.
The kids still talk about it when they see me. It was a hoot. But, my wife was not happy at all when she heard about it.

I'd be way more worried about blowing out a knee or something else stupid happening to me than I would be about injuring a kid at this point. I'm still young but my body already doesn't feel like it used to.

A few years ago, we had a coach play scout safety. We just couldn't get a look from anybody we had, according to him. But, he was so full of himself anytime he could be a bad a$$, he would try and do it. The kids didn't like him, but they mainly ignored him.
Well, he tried to get to a kid on the post, at the same time the actual kid at the other safety spot was getting there. This guy had no pads on, and both kids were in full pads. He got caught between the two, and it's a miracle he didn't get paralyzed. But, his knee was gone.
Everything was torn.
Never heard anybody scream like that before.

Coaches jump in to help run drills Be "dummies" and give an accurate look when we are trying to show a specific thing an opponent does
ZERO good can come from a coach wearing pads against kids
Only lawsuits

I think the statute of limitations has passed on this so Ill chime in. My third year coaching I was teaching cut blocking on scoops. They just didnt get it and I got pissed. I told a kid to give me his helmet. I stepped up and cut the piss out of a kid. Broke his thumb. But we were able to scoop like nobody's business after that. When he came back the next day in a cast I just knew I was done. Havent done anything remotely that stupid since.

This year I run scout QB for our inside period but really I prefer not to. I feel like I'm getting reps that someone else should be using to develop and I can't coach the line, but our normal scout QB is throwing 1 on 1s during that period and through a weird circumstance there are no other QBs so I have to.
I put a helmet on when we were running midline and triple only because before I got there a coach was doing the same thing and caught a helmet to the face. Definitely felt like the biggest tool on Earth. If you need pads to simulate the look you're giving, you probably shouldn't be doing it, just my opinion.

I play scout team QB for the same reasons everyone else has mentioned. I take a helmet off of one of the FR and wear it during this period. Only reason I do it is for the incidental contact that can happen. They are in no way shape or form trying to hit me, but if it is an option and I cut up into the hole there is going to be some helmets coming in, if the kids are playing hard (which is what we want.)
First day I didn't wear a helmet and it wasn't anything serious but did take a little shot to the side of the head. It was accidental and stuff, but it just made me realize that it wouldn't take much to really hurt in that situation.
Ever since then, I wear a helmet while playing scout team QB.

That's what I was saying. I would never wear pads. The only reason I've worn the helmet is because of incidental contact. You don't get "incidentally" blasted by the defense so that you need to wear shoulder pads. Besides, all it takes is for one parent to SEE you in pads and say "Why the eff is he wearing pads? Is he running over our kids?" My first year coaching, my SS ran down hill on a blitz and slipped on the grass and his helmet went right into my tooth and chipped it. That's why I wear the helmet. But, like coach said ... I always feel like a DB when I do.
