I heard a old successful coach say this" when you change your offense or defense from year to year, your seniors become freshman all over again. "

No arguement there. Tweaking is one thing but wholesale changes are usually a mistake.

They were a triple option school when Aikman got there, I doubt he thought they would change. His transfer had more to do with the emergence of Jamelle Holloway than any offensive philosophy.

as a DW coach I take offense to several comments you made. I know many DW coaches who spend A LOT of time helping to develop a quarterback. you may THINK it is 4 plays, you may THINK it is just a couple of passes, but that is your opinion. You have not played EVERY DW coach, so a blanket statement like that is out of line. I also disagree with your comment "if you have talent like that why run the DW". I can tell you why, for me anyway, why? It wins! (and it wins a lot). To make commets such as these indicates to me you think DW coaches are "too lazy" to do anything else, or "too dumb" to learn anything else. I have found a system that I am comfortable with, and that works for me year in and year out with the talent (or lack of talent) that I have. It is a very flexible system that can threaten 10 gaps at any time with a run, and also puts us into a 4 quick situation every time we line up. Stack too may in the box, we can and will throw on you (if we so choose). Too few in the box, we will ram the ball down your throat. Is it a perfect system? Maybe not for you, but it suits me fine. You choose to throw it all over, good for you. I am happy you have found a system that works for you. But do not try to act as though because some of us are DW guys that we are beneath you. I can guarntee I am as detail oriented or more than almost any coach on this board inculding you. I can guarantee that I and my assistants spend numerous hours developing not only our RB's, but our Qb's, our OL, our TE's/WR's etc. Too say that "all" of us DW guys do not try to develop players is ridiculous.

And...are we a cult? Yes we are. But no more than IZ/OZ guys, airraid guys, wing t guys etc. It seems to me that anytime someone is bashing a specific offense DW is the target. I know a lot of DW teams that have beaten a lot of the other style teams as well, and vice versa. You need only look at Clovis East HS in California, who finished ranked in the top 25 in the nation a year or 2 ago. Just because you do not like the DW or understand the DW doesn't give you the right to trash the DW either. When you beat our team, than you can trash MY DW, but not everyone else's. (Although it will never happen as we will never play...lol!

there are those out there that really hate the dw aint there?
wouldn't really ever want to run it personally, but I can see how it works for sure
also, I really like some of the offensive philosphies in Valloton's book about formations and things, really made me think as a younger coach
air it out guys and dw guys are a little like oil and water though as long as there is some respect it should all be good

Tremendous amount of respect for all offensive ideas, it really is all about execution and being systematic anyway. I just personally am a DW guy, but have beaten by air it out guys, and by IZ/OZ teams. I would not say this is out of hand brophy, we are not fightin' (at least I am not, my DW brethren may be different than I am though) we are discussin' and isn't that what this board is all about? Thanks for the kudos tog, I have been blessed with some great kids and assistants here, really not much to do with me! I just guide the ship!

That was a cool tape/story there Brophy about Helix high and the USC kid but one thing that really annoys the crap out of me are players who won't toss the ball to the official after they score. That was a must do thing to me or you didn't touch the ball period- Reggie or whoever! A little off the subject but manners are manners I guess? Most of the skill guys who played for me scored enough so it wasn't a gigantic deal to get into the endzone and would always find the official, hand it or toss the ball(underhand) to him and then celebrate with their teammates. Failure to do this would not invoke the death penalty but would be close to breaking one of the 10 commandments to me! Arrrrgh!!!!

Arrrrgh!!!! one of the ways to speed up the nohuddle is to have your ball carrier hand the ball to the ref after each play. this way refs will put the ball in play faster and it promotes good sportsmanship. when we score then it is natural for the ball carrier to hand the ball to the ref in the endzone.

I agree airman, I want the officials on my side on a close call and you'll seldom get that if you have an ill mannered team(coaches included).

I tend to get rapped up in the game I forget about them. refs are not going to change a call, so why berate them. I always found it odd bobby knight at indiana demanded his players behave but he could go off on a offical. berate them and be nasty. to me is shows a sign of disresect to yell at officals. it tells your kids it is okay to do this to people in positions of power. the last play is history. cannot change it. focus on the play which is at hand.

I will start off by saying I am biased toward the Manning Family. I have worked for them at their Passing Camps the past 4 years or so.
The entire family is as classy as they come. If I am going to pick a QB to pull the trigger for my passing game, then I am going to pick Peyton 10 out of 10 times.
As far as the punt team call, that is pretty amazing that he has that much power as a player. I wouldn't want my QB doing that to me, but I am also not one of the most successful NFL coaches of this generation either. This isn't the first time that has happened so I can assume that if Peyton was told before by Dungy "don't ever show me up again!" Peyton probably would not do it again.
The protection comment does come off as sounding pretty bad. But Michael Irvin and Mike Ditka said in the days that followed, that they felt as though Peyton's comment were totally appropriate and not throwing anyone "under the bus." Also, I don't remember the Colts' OL getting beat man to man as much as they were having picking up schemes. I am wrong in saying that the QB is responsible for most of the protection calls at the LOS?

and just so you know airman, I have a former QB who will compete for a starting job as a QB in college, and the one who followed him was aksed to try out for the Barnstormers if/when they re-establish themselves as the arena team in Iowa.
Have a former OT who starts as a TE for USD and is very solid. Also have a former WB who will start at D1AA SDSU next fall AND another WB who was an All American this year for Morningside. Do not tell me that my coaches do not develop players. For a tiny school I would put my kids up against anyone's as far as time spent developing players. Yes, also have a former WB who will be a walk on DB or WR at Iowa next fall and will be great, will most likely earn a scholarship after a year. Was offered at ISU as preferred walk on but needed a year to grow (size wise) at a JUCO. And Clovis East was ranked 23rd (sorry). That does not even include this year's kids who have not decided where to play college ball....

Your "high powered offenses" averaged barely more than 2 TD's per game in the NFL this year (.84 rushing and 1.26 passing = 2.1 TOTAL)
only 3 teams in the NFL had more rushing TD's than FG's.
You guys call that offense? You can keep it.

you people are as bad as the media putting those pictures out there. like everybody doesnt know that kids go to college and get trashed. just because you can throw a football you're not supposed to have fun in college now?
as for peyton manning, how can you complain about a guy putting everything he has into the game. it pisses me off when i see a guy after a game and hes like "uhh ya we all played bad, we just didnt execute". peyton was pissed. thats how i want to see my leader.
I think maybe im the only one to notice but there is football at every level including the nfl and then their are the nfl playoffs. they are two different games. if you want to win championships in any league but the nfl or you want to win regular season nfl games spread it out and throw the piss out of it. if you want a super bowl ring you have to play great defense, be balanced on O and not turn it over. it seems like no matter how good your run game is in the playoffs you're gonna get stuffed, because everybody in the playoffs can stop the run. comes down to big plays and not turning it over. look at the patriots teams the last few years...versatile on defense. they can stop pass or run. then they're versatile on offense. if they need to spread out and throw on you they can or if they need to run they can and they dont TURN IT OVER. i love brett favre but he cant win a playoff game anymore because he throws 4 pics everytime.

Hey I EXPECT to see pics of NFL guys being regular guys. He is an NFL QB. For God's sake I hope he is out having some fun at night and getting pics taken with college hotties. I know I would be if I were single, an NFL QB, and a Super Bowl Champ. LOL
