The rule in Wisconsin is that you have 4 days of contact during the summer, starting when school ends and ending August 1st. The days need to be consecutive, I believe, and it has to be with the entire team at once. You can use pads, the original rule was that players couldn't use their own school's equipment, but it was changed after the original announcement of rules at the WFCA clinic 2 years ago. The only thing they've said is that the 4 days shouldn't be used as 4 days of practice, but they have never really defined what exactly that means.

I talked to several coaches and get several answers. some say pads, some say no pads. some day consective and some say once per week. I do not think there is a lot of control over this as of yet. I am sure there will be in the near future. the rules are very vague. another thing people are wondering is, 4 days, what does that mean? 4 days like preseason or 4 practices? I mean you could get 3 practices aday in, over a 4 day period and you are ahead of your opponents.

peg, don't need another team to turn you in. just wait until one of your players happens to mention to his cousin that he sprained his ankle or made 12 catches in a 7 on 7 game against "so & so high school" last week. then, that kid asks his coach why they don't have 7 on 7 games like his cousin's team. next thing you know ... charlie b is calling your school. be careful. i've been around where a friend or cousin of a kid mis-spoke to another about what we did and uil got all riled up until we explained the situation

your right huey.
i know it is done around the dallas area. we never did it in league play, but if you are going to a 1 on 1 setting it happens a lot. not saying its right, just what i have seen in and around dfw. i'm sure you have seen the same type stuff.
the thought is treat it like a scrimage. won't get into who, but have seen the big boys do it.
anyway, i agree that you have to be careful and its better just to follow the rules. but i'm not naive enough to think it doesn't go on.

Here's the guidelines from the WIAA: www.wiaawi.org/football/footballregs.pdfIt clearly says the 4 days for football must be consecutive. The pads issue I'm almost positive of, because they really screwed it up in the beginning by saying teams couldn't use their own pads, but then changed it. 4 days is 4 days, like at a camp you can have multiple practices per day. If it were only 4 practices, it wouldn't help with coaching your own players at the camps put on by the state colleges since they're more than 4 practices long.

South Carolina 10 days in Helmet and Shoulder Pads. We can have 7 on 7 scrimmages and tournaments throughout the summer until one week before Summer practice begins. No camps with full gear. We can however practice throughout the summer with our kids (No Equipment) ie: fundamentals and skill work throughout the summer.

Louisiana, I coach at Evangel in Shreveport, LA. We have 15 days of spring practice with pads on. Normally we get anywhere from 10 to 12 days with the pads on with a scrimmage against another team around May 15. We have played Haughton for the past few years in the spring game. Our seven on seven tourneys start in June. We normally attend three big tourneys. Such as the Hoover tourney in Alabama, LSU tourney and the La Tech tourney among others. We get to coach our kids in these tourneys plus have twice a week practices with seven on seven for about a hour apiece on tues and thurs. We get to put in a good bit of the offense and defense with seven on seven. We also during the summer months if we do not go to a tourney during a weekend we will play a area school around here on a tues or thurs such as parkway, haughton, captain shreve, calvary, and many others. It really helps the staff and the kids for the following summer season.
