In Illinois when have the first 3 days of fall camp in helmets only...what would you do with this time?
Special Teams of course...
(BTW, we get 25 contact days in the summer so offense and defense gest installed then...)

Play some "deathstick" and get some phsyicality back in their system.
Another thing I would do is general conditioning. You probably don't have quite the problems that us southern guys have, but we have issues with overheating when the season starts. That helmet keeps a lot of heat in! It takes acclimation!

We condition a lot and work on footwork and fundamentals. Lots of Xs and Os, learning of the O and D, Specialties, etc. I've found you can get more fundamental work on when the kids aren't padded up because when they have on the pads they're all ready to hit. Without pads they're more willing to listen.
djwesp- It's still real hot here until about Week 2. Normal two a days weather is 90-100 with humidity. Usually around that for Week 1, then the weather usually breaks the next week or two.

Condition, Special Teams, TIMING - on offense and defense, look at the younger/new kids to see if any of them can help you. Things may change (personnel wise) once they put on the pads but get as much teaching, timing, and conditioning in as you can. By the way, Florida has the same rule of 3 days in helmets and shorts.

We have been in just helmets for a few weeks now, 3 days a week. We basically run a normal practice. We do a few things different of course but we have indy, 7-7, team, and do some special teams. We just really work on fundamentals during the summer. I do alot of work with the OL on their steps, some leverage drills, and other fundamental work. We put in one play a day and bird dog the hell out of it. Then we run team O on air condition and get out of there. About 2 hours a night.
When you say 25 days of contact, is that 25 days of as many practices you want like 25 days of doubles? Or when you say contact do you mean contact with the kids through out summer?

We do a lot of conditioning, and fundamentals, more fundamentals, and oh yeah, fundamentals. We will rep the hell out of pursuit drill, tip drill, and assignments on defense. On offense we do alot of work on coming off the ball, crisp clean exchanges, proper footwork for line and backs. Like I said earlier lots of fundamental work. Because as we all know the first day we put pads on we all take a big step backward for a while.

In Illinois a day of contact is just that, a day of contact. You can meet as long as you want that day. In theory, you can go double sessions if you want, and I know some teams that do. You cannot scrimmage other schools in anything but 7 vs 7 and then you can only wear helmets. The big thing to do in Illinois is to take the team for a week to a local college and stay 4 nights and run a camp that is similar to double sessions in college.
We have 5 days of mini camp for the skill guys right after school gets out for the summer from 7:30 until 9:30 AM (Shorts and helmets). Then we have 15 days of practice (3 weeks Monday thru Firday in July) with shoulder pads and helmets where we go from 7:00 AM until 10:30 AM. We run it just like practice during the season. 90 minutes of offense, 90 minutes of defense, 30 minutes of classroom. Then 5 days where we go to 7 vs 7.
The rest of the summer we open the weight room 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. Lifting and conditioning does not count as a contact day as long as the lifting and conditioning session is open to any sport and to any student at the school. Cannot do anything football related, only speed, conditioning, and lifting. Once you limit it to football then the lifting counts as a contact day. The basketball, football, and wrestling coaching staff take turns opening up the weight room for the kids.
Most teams in Illinois have their base defense and offense in by double sessions. The three day no pads rule is an old rule from when there was no summer practice in June and July. Technically you cannot make any of the 25 days of contact mandatory so you may have kids that want to come out the first day of practice hence the 3 days without pads.
